I recently picked up a 1957 Gibson L-7C (dream guitar!) and have a Benedetto S6 on it right now. I really like the sound but I'm chasing more of a Barney Kessel vibe.
I've been on the hunt for a floating/suspended Charlie Christian-style pickup, but options seem pretty limited these days, especially since Pete Biltoft retired. His pickups were perfect for this kind of setup, and it's been tough finding a used one.
Does anyone know of other makers offering something similar? Or maybe a way to get a custom floating version?
I’ve heard Lollar makes a great CC pickup—anyone know if they do custom floating mounts?
Really hoping to find something that doesn’t require drilling or modifying the top, trying to keep the guitar as original as possible.
Beautiful instrument! I love the natural finish L-7s. I have a 63 sunburst that I'll never part with.
I went with the Kent Armstrong 2D humbucker from archtop.com. It's not a CC obviously put probably closer to a traditional floater sound than the S6. I had a Benedetto B6 in a Guild and they're just kind of strangely voiced pickups, didn't bond with it. Armstrong stuff sounds a little more natural IMO.
I wanted a by-then-out-of-production Biltoft CC floater enough that I bought the Gibson SF-17 attached to one. And got a nice, fat neck, too. No regrets. I have heard that with Pete having retired, the Dreamsongs CC floater is a very good alternative, and in the same league.
A Dearmond 1000 or 1100 will get you some of the way there and really suit that beautiful guitar.
I'm lucky to have two Biltoft floating CC pickups, they have a bit more output, and a bit more clarity than a Dearmond, but I can EQ them to all sound fairly lose.
I didn't like the S6 at all - it had a dead/dull sound and horrible string balance.
