Here's a video of Jimmy Raney playing on the Zoller AZ-48 floater. This is the best video I've found to date for hearing what that pickup really sounds like. I'm pretty sure it's a widely wound single coil. Sounds a little bit CC-ish. The playing is ~ between 1:00-2:30.

Sorry I can't help - yet. I intended to mount that PU on my Emperor Regent several years ago. Never happened, because it's larger than a Johnny Smith style floater, and I didn't want to subject the pickguard to invasive surgery. One day I may stumble on a vintage, mail order ++ grade archtop needing some TLC, and that's where the AZ may end up.

I have a Korean Fenix FAE8 ( similar to an Epi) which had a Zoller neck mount. TBH it wasn't a good pickup. I couldn't get a warm 'jazz' tone and the high E string was very quiet with it. I spent a fortune experimenting with different strings with no success. I now have a mini HB that came off a budget Ibanez. It's really great now.

This pickup is definitely no single coil! Once the cable of such a pickup was broken near the housing. Curiously, I opened the epoxy-filled coils. There were 2 coils, a bar magnet in the middle. The coils were filled with an iron bar, and wrapped in copper foil before masking with some resin.

    Thanks!

I believe that there is a good description of these pickups in the patent application that can be found on google patents.

A fascinating patent. So it is single coil with 2 magnets whose polarities are perpendicular to each other.
Unfortunately I didn't get on with my Zoller but thanks for the post.

The Patent shows any single coil of Attila Zoller. The picture shows what I've seen while opening the AZ 48.

I had it once in my Epiphone Emperor. Sweet sound, one of the best of the many pickups I tried in it. (I dig more the full PAF sound than J Smith sized sound.)

Only reason I took it off was the outlook. I don’t like black pickups. Except P-90s!
