I'm looking for a pedal to add dimensionality and presence, to saturate and blossom a little, to glue the flow together, to sweeten and juice, to thicken highs and tighten lows -- but not really for overdrive. Hoping to check out the Boss Waza Booster Preamp soon. Tried one? The demos I've watched don't seem especially... jazz orientated? I have a variety of guitars and amps -- looking for something that can work in a variety of scenarios. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

I don’t have any experience with the BP-1W, but I’ve been super happy with the JHS Clover. I’m sure there will be some other great suggestions that follow.

To carve the clouds from your tone and chisel the thunder from your lows, to sculpt with surgical fire and paint frequencies in vivid colours, to lift the veil from your signal and set it ablaze with clarity I suggest thee to reach for an EQ pedal.

It's really a trial and error thing, cause so many things depend on the rest of your rig.

For me most of the time, playing with small non master volume tube amps, it's a Boss Eq pedal. When really needing a booster, I use a Mad Professor Ruby Red Booster which is a clean booster, a treble booster and a mild overdrive in one pedal.

I second the suggestion of the Xotic EP Boost. Small, super simple and just adds something special that’s hard to describe. Many folks use it as an “always on” pedal at lower settings and if you want more of a boost, just turn the (one and only) knob up. Supposedly modeled after the preamp section of the old Echoplex machines, thus the “EP”.

I use a Boss GE-7, just because I have it. I got it as lagniappe when I bought a used Vibrolux Reverb amp. I had it modded by AnalogMan, and it works well enough as a boost pedal as well as an EQ, giving a wide range of tones as desired. I also sometimes use it as a volume reduction pedal, if I want to use an EQ setting for solos and cut volume for rhythm. It works either way.

Thanks for these suggestions -- I had a blast following up on them.

jazzloverfat, thank you for the poem. sgonsell, thank you for "lagniappe." I looked it up, and now it's one of my words.

Friends, I bought the Waza. Long session at the store checking it out with my Japanese Squier Bullet and Champ -- "Gene Clark and the Godsins" (1967) was on repeat, and I played along three times, trying everything from neck pickup with tone at zero to palm-muted bridge pickup plinking. All the sounds benefited from both the RE and CE modes ("regular" was less immediately compelling, a true clean boost, but with other guitars and amps the purpose may become clear) -- the EQ profile, gain structure, and subtle compression of each did kind of exactly what I hoped; balancing without flattening, adding articulation and presence, making the guitar feel responsive and alive, in the blossoming zone that's a little more than clean boost, a little less than OD. I'm going to spend the rest of NPD reading -- the pedal is still in its box and I'm kind of enjoying this feeling of freedom and peace -- but I'm looking forward to making some music tomorrow!

Eloquently put! I always bring this little €19 gadget. It’s divine. Tame those high-end transients while keeping the sound of the guitar intact? Getting rid of annoying sub-lows? Adding some mid-boost to add snarl to an overly polite humbucker? Boost or cut your overall signal volume without touching your guitar’s volume pot? Done.

I own and regularly use the MXR / Bradshaw MC-401 Boost pedal for double bass all the time.

Start the solo, step on the button, +4dB. Front Of House never has to guess whether I'm starting a solo.
Finish the solo, step on the button, back down to zero. FOH never has to guess whether I'm finishing my solo.

No tone knobs. Neutral and transparent enough for Bob Bradshaw.
    4x over @ Guitar Denter @ $50-70
Many @ Reverb $70 and up

I have a clone of this circuit that recently knocked my Blue Note into reserve status. They are very very similar, and the Blue Note is really good, but the Gladio circuit is just a little better, fatter, though the controls are much more sensitive to inputs whereas the Blue Note has a wide range of adjustment, which makes lower volume stuff a bit easier to dial in. Great pedal.

I do love the simplicity of a pedal with one knob. I got this not only for the boost, but because it looks so cool. Turns out it is a great pedal as well.

Or go cheap and cheerful. These are stupidly cheap, and work just fine. They're, like, @$20-$25 used, which is nuts.

These are awesome. I have one. It's also great as a bass guitar DI.

I've always used a Korg Tone Booster. It's clean, Clean, CLEAN until around 8 on the gain knob, when it because a brutal overdrive.

After the fact, but feel like I'd be remiss to not throw some suggestions out there... I've gotten great results from my Nocturne preamps, either the Atomic Brain or the JR Barnyard. The JR will have a slightly fatter sound to it, probably better for Jazz. They work great with all of my Tele's, Strats, Guilds, Gretsches, and P-90 Gibsons / Epiphones.

ATOMIC BRAIN(R) BS-301 preamp - Full range Dynamic preamp ( its a Dynobr – The Nocturne Brain
JR BARNYARD(R) EH-150 /185 octal tube style Preamp – The Nocturne Brain

If you happen to be in the market for a cool reverb or tape echo, the El Pescadoro reverb comes with a JRB preamp included, and the Mystery Brain, has the Atomic Brain integrated into it.

MYSTERY BRAIN BS-301 ™ tape echo – The Nocturne Brain
