I recently had a problem with a new-ish D'A purchase, and I contacted them and they were FANTASTIC at resolving the issue asap, exchanging emails daily.

    Nice!

The name has been sold to various people over the years with mixed results in terms of the actual instruments. The current owners seem to be a little more driven to produce good guitars, although many of them would be almost unrecognizable in terms of harking back to John D (e.g., solidbodies, the Bob Weir signature models, etc.). The few I have played so far (all archtops) sounded good and felt good.

Good to hear. My EX SS is a very well made guitar.

Good to hear Woody. I picked up an SS deluxe baritone last year and I’m not playing it much but it definitely delivers. Plays well, sounds very good. and certainly well enough made for the price range.

When did they become current? (that's not a philosophical question).

Prior to 1999, GHS Strings owned the trademark after obtaining it from Jimmy D'Aquisto's partner who obtained it in full when Jimmy and his partner split up. Prior to that, Jimmy and his partner obtained the trademark from the Estate of John D'Angelico.

That is wrong. 1999 is when John Ferolito, Sr. (the Arizona iced tea guy) bought the brand from GHS. He made guitars ca. 2005-8. 2011 is when he sold the brand to his son, who is still the primary owner. Jr. went in and out of production a couple of times, but since ca. 2013-4 they've been in continuous production. I guess it's possible that Ferolito Sr. but I don't think it makes sense to call him the current ownership.

The guy who took care of me was at Bond Audio, I think the “parent” company(?)
