For those of you who use a Strat with a 5-way: Do you use the neck pu alone, or the neck and middle together? I've been experimenting with it, and it seems that one way sounds better in the upper range, and the other sounds better in the lower range. And, that relationship changes quite a bit depending on the tone knob setting.

If I want a neck pickup "jazz" tone, I use the neck pickup alone, with the tone rolled back somewhere around 5 +/- a bit. If it's a really bad 60hz hum situation and I don't have my EHX Hum Debugger I might use neck+middle (my middle pickup is RWRP), but generally I only use positions 2 or 4 on my strat when I expressly want those quack tones.

Often I prefer the middle pickup by itself for a good jazz tone. It's a little clearer than the neck, and still warm with the tone rolled back.

neck alone. sometimes middle alone. tone rolled "halfway off", which is a useless description since i don't know the cap value or the taper of the pot. better description: roll vol and tone back until it sounds like jazz.

LOL! Maybe the best possible answer on this subject, irrespective of what guitar we're talking about.

I generally use the neck pu alone and adjust the volume and tone knobs to each room.

I don't want to sound like Dire Straits, so no. I almost never use the 2&4 positions.

My Stratocaster is a 2005 American Deluxe with SCN pickups. The neck SCN works pretty good for "jazz tone" when needed.

Wayne Krantz gets away with them but he does is own thing. Is it Jazz? I have seen him at a jazz festival. It was amazing.

My favorite jazz Strat sound is the middle pickup alone with the tone almost all the way back playing with a D'Andrea Pro Plec 351. Probably one of my favorite jazz sounds, period. The pick is key as it naturally rolls a lot of high end off.
