Just sharing that I received this Musima Record 17 today that I am very chuffed with. I think it is from the mid to late 60s. No tone bars on this one, the top just has a much thicker section running down the middle. Not sure what the rotary switch does, there seems to be a neck setting, bridge setting, a bassy neck setting and the other has no output. If anyone knows what the rotary switch settings are meant to be I would be very grateful for info, and if anyone has a circuit diagram that would be great too. The pickups actually sound really good. I have parked it next to its older cousin the Record 15 from the 1950s. A really lovely couple of East German oddities.
The Musima Record was a very successful and well-known high-end guitar in the Worker's Paradise and other commie nations. Not an oddity at all. It also happens to be a fabulous guitar.
These guitars are quite unusual in the UK which is why I said oddity. A bit like seeing Tatra car driving down the high street. Fabulous quality and very desirable in its country of origin, but an unusual sight on these shores. I agree, fabulous guitars. I am smitten! The 17 I have looks almost unplayed, it has the original square frets which have a reputation for being a bit poor quality, but the guitar plays superbly and I wouldn't dream of changing them. Unfortunately on the 15, someone had made a real mess of the binding and frets trying to file the ends and I had to refret with the smallest frets I could find.
I, too, have a Record 15. They're also unusual here in the US. Mine is especially odd with its factory finish of sunburst top combined with a natural back. The sides have an end-to-end sunburst.
Hammertone is correct about them being fabulous guitars!
Great video. JL is amazing. And I was pleased to hear his tele opinions, which reflect my own in most respects, especially regarding weight and humbucking pu bias. A number of years ago I caught a...
