    Hi
There seems to be so many D'angelico EXL1s now, the different premiers, the exl1, the throwback, I cant keep up. But I saw this by a seller not too far away. He is saying its a deluxe model? It has the throwback style s holes but the normal exl1 neck, headstock, pick guard and Pau thingy fingerboard ( which I dont really like)
Does anyone know what makes it a deluxe? it seems to be same specs 17inch 25.5 scale
Here are pics he is asking £900

That's a strange one. Looks to be one of these, except the f-holes are the throwback style like you say:

    Excel EXL-1 (Discontinued) - D'Angelico Guitars

Might be a special or limited edition model, they seem to make quite a few of those every now and then.

I don't remember all the spec differences, but I'm pretty sure the Deluxe EXL-1 had US-made Seymour Duncan pickup and the Excel EXL-1 had a Korean Kent Armstrong. They also made the the Deluxe in a bunch of pastel colors with satin finishes that were quite hideous. I played one of these, and it had a remarkably good unplugged sound. That made me think they may also have been making the tops differently (thinner? different laminate?), or I could have been imagining that it was different (since I hadn't played an Excel EXL-1 in a long time at that point).

Eventually they just gave the Excel the same specs as the Deluxe and dropped the Deluxe. For a while you cold find the pastel colored EXL-1's super cheap. If you could abide the colors they were a steal.

mmm there is someone selling a exl-1 model for £600 on the same site, that doesn't have the Pau thingy fretboard. its a regular excel model. I remember seeing one in a shop brand new for £1200 about 5 years ago. I liked the look but it didnt play very well although im sure it would have been fine with a set up.
I just wondered if the deluxe had any special upgrades. thanks for the comments

    Close but no cigar-box guitar....

Here it is -- Deluxe EXL-1 (Discontinued) - D'Angelico Guitars

You can compare the specs of the regular and deluxe models, but they say the deluxe did not come in a natural finish. Maybe the seller is wrong?
