Probably everyone has their own likes on this one..
I like Fender P90's pretty well.
If I were splurging, thinking a Gibson Les Paul with a P90 is one of the better guitars around. Though actually, I would really like to try an Eastman Les Paul with a P90.

One, or two pickup? Single, or double cut? Price limit?

I only use the neck pickup, price preferably under $1,000

I like this one a lot, Sire has something similar but i never like how thin the neck gets towards the nut

If you can find one, the Epiphone “Inspired by 1954” Les Paul Custom is a really nice, yet not expensive choice.

Not having much cash to spare I bought the Epiphone LP Special, despite the colour not being entirely to my liking.
It certainly provides the sound I was after.

I have a 2013 Les Paul ‘50s Tribute gold top . I got it last summer for $900 (other finishes tend to be cheaper). I’m very happy with it. Plays and sounds great for jazz and blues.

That’s what I was thinking. The full hog body should be darker and more resonant than a maple cap.

Along those lines an SG Classic which also has a chunky neck. I have a 2007. Paid $650 used some years ago.

I'm not sure that's the difference. At least on the neck pickup, I think it's that the Special has a bit of quack/nasal resonant peak (almost stratty at times), and the maple cap is more even sounding. The LP has also more sustain, which usually means less body resonance, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant.

On clean sounds (especially neck pickup), the difference I describe is pretty obvious, but with OD and on the other pickup settings there's not a whole lof of difference, except the slight hollowness of the Special cuts through better. I'd say if you're looking to play jazz with it, the maple cap is a better choice, and for other music it's more of a toss-up/preference thing.
