I am thinking of possibly buying either a guitar or amp. Price $900-1600. For jazz….open back vs closed for amp. Like jazz standards and 60s DooWop, ballads, love songs etc. I am looking at boutique amps….Razers Edge, Rivera (probably too expensive unless used), Hendricksen and AER among others. Love the Johnny Smith sound=Sequil Vermont by Razers Edge. Dont know a lot about the class but the D class with open back Sequil sounds great as well as Rivera Jazz Supreama 1x15 or 1x12. I just play as a novice in my living room or with a friend at his house.
    any thoughts from anyone?
guitars that I like are Archtops and I really think it would be a waste of money as I have about 6 or so nice ones now.
    thanks.

For what you're describing, I'd suggest an open back cabinet whether you go with a combo amp or a head/cab setup. I am thinking a lot about a Toob cab and something like a BAM200 head or a DV Mark Raw Dog EG head. I have a tweed Deluxe style amp already, which is my main amp. I've come to the conclusion that I generally prefer open back cabs- to me they sound more natural and freer. To me a lot of closed back cabs sound like a stuffy nose.

For the price you’ll get a nice mini amp (Quilter, Henriksen whatever) and at least two different TOOB cabinets. If you plan to play in your living room as well as with a friend, that should be more than sufficient.

A Jazz Suprema 1x15 would be pretty swell.

A Deluxe Reverb would be pretty nice for a home rig. So would a Twin though it's got more power than you need for Madison square bedroom.

I love 50's and 60's doowop. Pretty much the pinnacle of American music IMO.

DV Mark makes some great stuff; I wouldn't trade my DVM "Silver Gen" for any Fender. Their stuff is light too, mine has a 1x12 and weights only 19 lbs...

For any given amp, there is usually some diversity of opinion.

My guess is that all the models that are discussed frequently on here are fine choices, but it's impossible to predict which one will most please a particular player.

So, my main advice may not be all that helpful. It's to figure out what you want to sound like and buy the amp (with a return privilege) that comes closest. Arguably, it shouldn't matter very much that some other player slightly prefers amp A to amp B.

I do have one thing to add, perhaps not relevant to your situation, about open vs closed back. I play a regular gig in a very tight bandstand. There's no room to put my amp behind me. It ends up right in front of me and I'm glad it has an open back -- which allows me to hear it better.
