Yes and no...The Fender "Wide Range" humbuckers have plenty of tele bite in the bridge position, for example.

Price goes way up with those, though I don't think our OP necessarily needed a budget instrument. I know a guy who does jazz gigs and pit work with a Japanese made AZ, he absolutely loves it.

Humbuckers only, probably not, but you can still get a Tele sound from one that has a humbucker neck pick-up along with middle and/or bridge single coils - but it sounds like the op just wants the humbucker tone.

But that raises a question, there are single coils designed to sound like humbuckers, does the opposite exist, i.e., humbuckers designed to sound like single coils?

The point of my question is not so much for an answer. My own opinion is when we talk about a Tele as being good for jazz, it's the Tele with the two traditional pickups that we're discussing. (Like a firebird to me, has low wind traditional 'firebird' mini humbuckers- not the high DCR ones or p90s or regular humbuckers or 'LP' minis). What seems to have happened is people are taking a regular Tele and putting in hbs or p90s or CCs etc etc for jazz. You could do that with any slab guitar.

That's true, who plays jazz on a regular Tele... Julian Lage, anyone else? Bill Frisells Tele has a humbucker on it.

    Ed fucking Bickert sure did.

He later played with a humbucker...and sounded exactly the same.

Has anyone ever seen a photo of Ed Bickert playing anything other than a Tele? Surely he must have at some time.... or maybe not.

Ed's comping is perfect, regardless of guitar or pickup choice.

Please no Telecasters if you are gonna wear shades in your indoor gig. It has to be a some sort of hollowbody guitar preferably with a florentine cutaway.

IMHO, the optimal guitar for what you describe is the MIJ Korina Offset Telecaster. It's a Jazzmaster.. boat tele neck.. P90's. Not cheap and has to be acquired from the used market. However ergonomics are as good as it gets and it's capable of something like a Les Paul P90 tone without all the Les Paul draw backs. That and it's just a really great looking guitar.

Look for an old Strat Plus with original Lace sensors and TBX tone control from 1987-89.
The original Lace sensors are noiseless and the neck PU will make you sound like you're playing an L-5; the TBX shifts the frequency response if you want the bridge or middle PU to sound like a Telecaster.

I haven't so much as looked at another guitar for the last 37 years.

I really can't decide on new guitar. Help!-2-jpg

A late friend of mine had the plus deluxe. Not sure how it differs from the plus but it was a lovely guitar.
