Just bought a new guitar online, comparing American and Canadian dealers, after adjusting for the 69 cent loonie, stuff was around 12% cheaper, then add the fact I avoided the 8% TX sales tax thanks to NAFTA and the shipping is about a wash, I saved at least 20% buying from ?

There is a very real possibility the you can add a 25% import duty to that by the end of the day tomorrow.

Maybe get our gear from China....

Unfortunately Mr. Trump does not appear to understand how tariffs work. He seems to think that a bill is sent to the governments of other countries to pay, instead of comprehending that it is American citizens who pay the freight on tariffs. If he wants to trigger off a round of much more severe inflation than we've just been getting over, across-the-board tariffs on imports will do that very effectively.

Perhaps I misunderstood the OP ... wasn't he saying that he's in the US purchasing from Canada? (although at least for the moment he seems to be punting that idea down the road a bit)

I'm not sure that would matter. My understanding was a 25% blanket tariff, but since the action has now been punted down the road for study, we don't really know what was intended.

Here is an example -
This is Guitar Salon International in Los Angeles
Just a moment...
$9000 US for a new Licari Albayzin
and here is a new Licari Albayzin in CA:
C-661, Valerio Licari (Italy) – Grand Salon de Guitare
for $8495 CAD or less than $6000 USD
I would also pay 8.25% sales tax for buying in the US but nothing for importing from Canada
-
But that may change on or about Feb 1.

What's the expression ... that there's a small but significant indication that it's been the other way around (for a while now)?
