I'm familiar with the NYL -1 and 2, and the NYSS-3 (which is/was their semi) but was there one with humbuckers set in the top, like a 175 or L5? I can easily play my NYL-2 at the moment, but am still having issues with my guitars that have bigger necks. Just curious, I can't find any old catalogs anywhere that aren't behind paywalls of some sort.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, with humbuckers they made the NYL-2DH archtop (L5 type) and the NYSD-9 as solid body.

I haven't seen any vestax archtops with a built in humbucker, but I'm gonna keep plugging this newer one since I've played one and was super impressed. Highly recommend for anyone looking for the best electric archtop under 2k.

You have an NYL-2, correct? Does the Excel have the same neck profile or something very close? The reason I am looking for a VDA is 90% the neck profile on the NYL-2s.

I don’t have an NYL-2 so I can’t comment. The only D’Angelico I have is a 1936 with the most monstrous but simultaneously most playable neck I’ve ever played.

The neck profile on that modern DA I shared is nice, not too slim. Feels like my hutch L5s.

Thanks for that, I had a Hutch L5 briefly but don't actually remember the neck well enough as its been a few years. I'll see if I can find an Excel to play.

The neck profiles on NYL2’s is very comfortable. I owned two of them and kick myself for not keeping one!

    They did a semi-hollow.

    And an “electric style body”

It's all about the neck for me at the moment; I have too many guitars in cases because it hurts to play them. And they are fantastic carves

    I'd second this.

I saw one pop up used for an obscenely small amount of money so I grabbed (thanks in part to a liberal return policy). I didn't expect an instrument this well made and nicely appointed for the MSRP, let alone what I found it for. I'm typically not a fan of poly finished guitars for feel and sound. I found the Excel to have an acceptable feel but the sound was spot on (mine arrived with flats). I've since swapped out the bridge for a tuneomatic and replaced the stock nut with bone. Both these changes helped make a very good sounding guitar a great sounding guitar. I'd highly recommend checking out the Excel 1 if you're shopping for a 17' hollow and don't have a huge stack of cash. Great build, killer looks, and amazing sound.
