I'm getting pretty pissed off at the quality control. The latest set is super rough and not ground flat properly.

Man, Jack, either you have really bad luck or are much more sensitive than I am. I’ve installed dozens of sets and only have found one I had a problem with and I’m pretty sure that one ended up user error as a result of installation with locking tuners.

this isn't a *ME* problem. I've been using thomastik JS112 for 10 years or so, and have them on 4 of my archtops. No problem like this on my other guitars with the same set

I have probably used over 30 sets of Thomastik without any rough strings. The only mishap was a low e string snapping as i started tuning.I contacted Thomastik and they sent me a replacement,so i have zero complaints. Are these rough strings you keep getting bought from the same vendor?

Are they worth $43 a set?

I have been using Thomastik Swing Series flatwounds on nearly all of my guitars for about twenty years. Once, I had a set with one dead string. No other problems during all that time.

Where are you buying the sets from? I bought some from a local music store and found them pretty rough and figured they must have been sitting around for a while and developed corrosion. The sets are not fully sealed like D'Addario strings are. I am waiting on a set from Sweetwater (JS112 as well) and can update if mine are rough or not.

Whoa, and I thought TI George Bensons were expensive. What’s unique about them?

I had a set a few years ago that corroded within about 2 weeks. (I cleaned the strings with alcohol, and despite some oxidation so major progression over a long time.)

When I was installing strings on my ES-175 a few months ago, I broke 2 strings at the post. My fault I guess, but I've never broken strings like that installing them before. No problems since then though.

I will probably stick with TI Jazz Swings for my 175, but my other guitars get D'A rounds.

I have bought several hundred sets of TI Flats over the years and I have never had a problem. That said, I wonder what they do with string sets that fail their in house inspection? Could it be that they sell those to a discount retailer?

AFAIK TI strings aren't ground, they're wrapped with flat windings.

I know that all the 13s of TIs I've bought in past years had a rough feeling G string. The 12s have been better. This may be subjective, but I feel a stickiness with TI strings, especially the brass plated trebles.

My biggest beef with TIs is the string gauges. This is also subjective, but I don't like how thin they A, D, G strings are on TIs.

The dogal strings are amazing. I haven't put flats on any of my guitars in at least 2 years. I tried the dogals and now my sunburst wesmo always has a set of dogals. I've had them on there for 6 months now and the wound strings are holding up excellent, so to any comments on the price, I respond that I find them very cost effective given the longevity.

I have Big Mike Unity guitar here I have to get back to him. I originally had it set up with round wound DR Pure Blues. Big Mike wanted the Ti swings flat wound. I put them on but quite frankly the round wounds sound way better. They make the guitar come much more alive. Normally flatwounds do this but for some reason this Unity Angel has a sensitive top and will pick up all the extra sound generation. If I use flats I go to the lighter gage .11-.50 I have on my Super 400.

I just recently went up to 13s and I’m not sure, they sound a bit ringy still if that makes any sense. The G and the D especially, had them on around 2 weeks now. I’ve been on Swings 12s for a few years, thinking about sticking them back on. Probably just being impatient right enough ha.

If the Dogal’s are too much coin you might want to try Pyramid Golds. I switched from TI’s to Pyramid a few years ago and am not going back. Haven’t had any QC issues with them.

I've had no issues with the TI but still have been getting into the Optima Jazz Swing, as they are cheaper and seem just as good to me. Maybe a little less flexible ?

I am using the Dogal chrome steel flats on one guitar, they seem great, and it felt like they almost strung themselves with their perfect length silks on all 6 strings. Very pricey, but if they last like other flats I will keep getting them sometimes. They seem to have a bit less low midrange than TIs. But then you could find a midrange difference in two of almost any pieces of music gear, and I've only heard one set of these.

How does this cause a problem for you? Finger squeak? The Thomastik are really more akin to round wounds than most flats IMO. Dogal are nice more of a old school flat sound, with a bit more zing. They, as I remember have more tension in the gauges that they offer. As far as longevity, I don't think they last any longer than any other string. That said I don't think the TI last any longer either. At least with the TI you can find them at deal prices, one dealer with Dogal, no deal!
