    Hi!

I am building a singel pickup guitar- very similar to Gibson les Paul junior- with the pickup at the bridge.

very curious is someone has experienced of playing jazz with that setup?
if yes what guitar and what kind of pickup did you use?

    Thanks!

I have a Reverend Sensei Jr, which is an offset body of Korina/White Limba, and a single P-90, with TOM stop tailpiece and bridge. It also has a bass rolloff in addition to the tone knob, so it is VERY versatile. I have the stock pickup in it, which is pretty hot and more bass heavy than I'd like, but the rolloff knob is there to help if it gets flubby. I would still rather use my other guitar which has a Tele bridge and Firebird neck pickup for jazz though. The Firebird pickups keep so much articulation, even with the tone rolled all the way back, that I honestly think a single Firebird pickup in the neck position is as versatile as a single P-90 in the bridge position... and I would die on that hill.

Little late to the party here. I have an Eastman SB 55V, a fantastic guitar. I can get jazzy tones out of it. I think the important thing is what P90 you use. My Eastman comes with an “underwound” style Lollar P90 which allows more clean tones then your typical P90. Another cool feature of the Eastman is that it has a no load tone pot meaning when you turn it up the tone pot is disengaged. Though that feature yields the opposite of your typical jazzy tone.

A Junior is a very versatile guitar.

There is nothing like the feel of a wrap around bridge! But you need a compensated wraparound like a Faber.

Let see your build when you are done.

I have a strong recollection -- albeit one that I could easily be convinced is simply me misremembering -- of seeing Bill Frisell early in his career playing a single-pickup Gibson. Looked SG-ish.

I know I've seen Bill playing at least two different SG-like guitars back in the 70s and 80s (one brown, the other wine red or cherry red) but I can't swear that either of them really had only one pickup. But I think one of them did. :::shrugs::: And yeah, dude definitely played some killer "jazz" on that axe!

[edit: Came across this pic in my archives. That looks like a single pickup, no?]

I have one too. As you say, great guitar. Really fun to play. Of course it won’t do the classic woody ES175 neck pickup thing. It does something else and it does that very, very well. I frequently play jazzy stuff on it and it’s a hoot.

I'm pretty sure John recorded this on a LP Junior

^^^ I heard it was a Melody Maker but if it was a Junior that would be even better…love that album!
