What are your thoughts about these? I've used Roland JC's in the past but never owned them. I tried them in a store the other day, I liked them even more than my handwired, custom Princeton (which is great BTW). I needed to play around with the EQ a bit to make them sound more rounded. You get a lush clean sound with a sense of depth and dimension with these amps.
JC-40 was very loud (even at 3). JC-22 can be a wonderful practice amp. I wonder if it's loud enough for small venues?

I got an JC-40 on loan. It's magnificent but OMG the hiss ...

I’ve had a JC22 for about ten years now. I despise chorus so that effect is never used. I feel the quality of the amp’s sound is directly proportional to the size of the guitar being played through it. Solidbodies don’t sound quite right to me through a JC, semis (think ES335) are nice, thinline hollowbodies (think ES330) are really good, jazzboxes are just wonderful. I mostly use it with my Ibanez GB10 and PRS 594 Hollowbody II. That 594 is an incredibly lively, responsive guitar that has “a lot of everything” in terms of sound. This guitar can be somewhat overwhelming when played through an equally responsive tube amp. The somewhat flatter response of the JC can be just the ticket for a guitar like that.
The JC22 packs quite a lot of punch. In a trio or quartet setting it will be more than sufficient. In bands with loud horn sections or hard-hitting drummers it might fall short.

I've owned a jc40. Bought it new. Man it's loud. The chorus is perfect. The Hiss....... that's a downer.
In the end i sold it. After a while it was a bit to "Harsh" in my ears. Specially playing louder at gig volume it was to ... yeah harsh/trebly.
Now i play a Koch Jupiter hybrid with my 335 type ibanez. Warehouse g12c/s speaker mounted
Play my jp20 over a minibrute and my ibanez 2616 over a Voc mv50clean mini amp over a warehouse g12c (4ohm) speaker.

I have a JC-22 but never played a JC-40, so can't make any real comparisons. From my understanding the JC-40 can get much louder. I can turn the JC-22 all the way up at home without feeling like it's going to do damage. It's loud, but not super loud. For my purposes (playing at home) it's nice because the whole range is potentially useful, but it's pretty easy to imagine that it wouldn't have enough for many playing out situations, though for quieter ones it might.
I like it perfectly fine with solidbodies (that's pretty much all I use) and like the chorus as well, but those are both sounds I already knew I liked.

The amp is somewhat bright and scooped when all the controls are at noon even when the bright switch off. But once I turn down the treble and increase the mids, it gets warm. It's still very clear and has a wonderful sustain.

The hiss of my JC22 is soft and doesn’t get louder as I turn the amp’s volume up. It doesn’t bother me.

Every amp hisses a bit but the hiss in this JC40 is pretty intense. It's pretty much unusable as a practice amp. Perhaps there is something wrong with the unit. Luckily it's just a rental. I mean the hiss in the older JC's is well known but turns out (according to the internet) many people complain about the hiss in these modern units as well (especially JC-40). There are some videos also demonstrating the hiss.

I’ve never compared different JC’s so I wouldn’t know.
