What do you think "really happened"? There's no indication that the guitar was actually sold, let alone sold for the ridiculously low asking price. All we know is that the seller ended the listing.

What did these really cost in '98?
(Also, admit it, that would be one "special" Campellone!

That shop had that same guitar for sale on Reverb for quite a while, for around $5K IIRC. Even that was under the market, but it didn’t seem to move. If you go to their website, it is there and showing up as “sold”. I would be surprised if they really sold it for $2,500. Maybe the buyer is a forum member and can enlighten us.
Here is the website listing Special Series 17 Guitars | Fretted Americana Inc.

It is all over the place that the low end of the used guitar market is crashing due to overproduction overseas, post covid "I-thought-I'd- learn-to-play-the-guitar-during-lockdown-but-I've-lost-interest", and the dwindling discretionary cash that inflation is causing.
Some of the prices I've seen for vintage stuff seem to be quite low on places like FB Marketplace (I've actually played and checked out a couple of guitars from there in person, so I'm not talking about scammers). I'm now wondering if price deflation isn't creeping into the vintage and high end market as well. I am curious to see what the actual selling prices are versus the asking prices on places like Reverb and dealer sites- even those have some notable markdowns on them.

The hollow-body guitar category on Reverb has over 300 pages of listings, and well over half of them have been up there for several months or longer, so most sellers don't seem to be getting the message that their asking price is out of tune with the market.

I think dealers just put ads up on Reverb to get their products out there and generate traffic to their websites, where they can sell without paying the extra fees. I don’t know what was going on with that Campellone. I believe it would sell easily for more than double the price shown on that ad.
