My Smith was stolen out of its case in 2001. (S/N 500535.) I held on to the case all these years but it seems unlikely I'll ever get it back. So I thought I'd put the case and cover up for sale and use the proceeds to buy a decent jazz box. Needless to say these rarely if ever come up for sale so I'm not sure what to ask for it. Case itself is clean and the cover is as well except for a small snag somewhere IIRC. (It's in storage right now.) Any ideas and perspectives are greatly appreciated.

They come up occasionally just like any vintage case might, I've had a few, including the cover but it was a while ago.
Now a real D'Angelico NYer case, those are pretty rare but even they pop occasionally.
You said it's in storage but a pic is worth a thousand words.

Is this case going to be offered for sale?

buduranus2, do you intend to sell the cover separately or only with the case together. I have the case original but would be interested in the case cover. Thanks

Hmmm. I might be interested in the case, but I don’t need the cover.

Everyone knows that old and used is better than brand new, and the older the better.

Btw, I feel for you, that must have been a horrible experience.

Is a 6 digit serial number indicative of a 60's Johnny smith? How did the interior color of the JS case change thru the 60's? I'm looking at one now and could use some help from someone with some good knowledge. Thanks! Things I know: 6 digit serial number, white framed truss rod cover, orange label. By the way what year was you Johnny with the 500535 serial number?

Most 1960’s Johnny Smiths that I have seen came in a black case with yellow lining. It was a premium case with exterior material that was a little different than the regular Gibson cases from the same period. A 1960’s Johnny Smith should also have a white framed truss rod cover with vertical engraving saying “Custom”. Sometime in the 1970’s, the truss rod cover was changed and said “Johnny Smith”. From about 1963 until the mid-1970’s, the serial numbers were generally 6 digits, but there were many inconsistencies and overlaps. You need to look at several features to accurately determine the year it was made. There is a fairly good guide here Vintage Guitars Info - Gibson collecting vintage gibson guitars
