Hi everyone! I recently received a Victor Baker Model 15 that I commissioned early this year. It is my first time commissioning a custom guitar and working with a luthier. I think it turned out very nice. I really like it a lot. I’m still getting used to it and was curious if others might have the same / similar model and would like to compare notes? I’d be curious on your string choice, amp choice, how you like to record the guitar, if you have made any changes to your’s, etc. anything you may have found helpful would be great! Thanks!

    See pics below

As they say on The Gear Page, "Pics, or it didn't happen!"

(And congrats, assuming it happened! Victor makes great instruments!)

Thanks marcwhy ! I had no idea about pics for proof. I added pics to the original post. I haven’t posted on forums much so I appreciate the heads up.

15" archtops are great "personal" sized guitars. Are VB's guitars more like the Gibson/Campellone builds, or the lighter brighter Benedetto/Eastman type of build? I've heard YT videos, but they're not very conclusive.

It looks like there are two tiny holes for a pickguard, yes?

Yes. Those are screw holes for the pickguard. Unfortunately, the original ebony pickguard had a hairline crack in it from shipping (ugghh), but Victor is great to work with and is making me a new one from carbon fiber. Just waiting on that to arrive so I can install.

One of my favorite things about the VB is that it is very light. I'm sure guitar weight for the same maker / model varies slightly between builds. This VB Model 15 weighs ~5.5lbs. I have never owned a Gibson, Benedetto, or Campellone so I can't speak to that comparison. Those are all nice guitars for sure. I can say that, to my ears, the VB has a warmer and more even sound across the neck than the Eastman Model 810-CE 7 and Godin 5th Avenue Jazz I have owned. However, it is not as loud acoustically as those guitars. The VB guitars are designed to be played amplified. They still have a nice acoustic sound, but it is not loud by any means.

Here is mine, june of 2017. bought it right off the site, some guy in Europe couldn't finish payment and I bought it. This was back when VB was building in NYC. it was my main for years, still is but i also have a Moffa Lorraine that i use alot as well. I made some changes, obviously the knobs, i also changed out the pots if i remember correctly, the tone with more of a sweep and added an orange cap. VB also made the peter Bernstein pickguard for me. its got alot of use and has opened up nicely. did. afret job a couple years ago. one thing i still want to do is change out the tune o matic. its cool but i have a Sadowsky true tone wood bridge i want to install.

That is a beautiful guitar! Thanks for sharing pics jazzgtrl4 ! Do you recall what pots / cap value you switched to? The thing that bugs me the most on the guitar is the tone pot because it doesn’t seem to do anything until halfway through the sweep Was your’s the same way? Did changing the tone pot fix that? I have wondered if that is normal operation and I have been planning to change the tone pot on mine since I didn’t know if it was a bad pot or maybe a linear taper rather than audio taper. Did you go back with the same Jescar frets / fret size when you did the re fret? Really appreciate any info you are willing to share.

Thank you jazzgtrl4 ! Any info you have is greatly appreciated! Nice that the frets are lasting well. I really like the jumbo frets that Victor uses and hope to put a lot of hours on mine as well.
