I posted a couple of the Metheny-type baritone examples last week but this it what happens when you raise the D and G an octave in an otherwise standard tuning. All it take is a couple of plain wound strings and you're good to go.

You mean plain unwound strings, a heavy E1 for the D+8 and a very light E1 for the G+8?!

What happens when you raise the D and G strings an octave?
The strings snap?

Here's the actual setup:

I know that most people here like heavier stings than I do, so the replacement strings would probably increase in size a bit to remain balanced with the rest of the set. The set I use for tuning down to B would probably be closer to what most people here would use to tune to standard pitch. That's a set of D'Addario Chrome XL 12's (12,16,24,32,42,52) and for the octave tuning replace the 24 & 32 with a plain 13 & 16.
The idea is to maintain the same level of tension (or at least as close as possible) with the two middle strings tuned up an octave as you would get from the heavier strings tuned to standard pitch.Last edited by Jim Soloway; 08-16-2024 at 11:55 AM.
