Anyone using BB112 string set with an ebony Benedetto style bridge? With the plain G string, I always assumed that set was inappropriate for use with the typical Benedetto style bridge and there would be intonation issues. However, I recently saw a You Tube post where they indicated they were using that string set with a Benedetto 16-B. I was surprised to see that.

I have never been one to think the saddle compensation made that huge of a difference on most archtops between wound and unwound 3rd. I like and only use the normal compensated saddle that is diagonal in gradual compensation from high E to low E. The difference between them is about 1/32 of an inch. This in my experience gives best overall intonation in most cases regardless of the wound or unwound 3rd. Some can be very picky about this, and I have decent ears, and they are not offended. Being right on at the 12th is fine but depending on where and how you play other options can be done.

On guitars with really shorter scale lengths the differences can be less forgiving especially short scale Birdland type guitars. Johnny Smith used to set his intonation at the 17th fret he was a master technician in addition to a master guitarist. In the end I don't like or use those already compensated saddles that are everywhere.

If it sounds good enough to you, it's good enough. If you absolutely must have perfect intonation on every string, then a Tune-o-matic is what you need. If you can live with the sound of a straight saddle, then it's fine.

After posting, I did see some older threads where some people order the BB21 round wound string and replace the plain 3rd string in the set.

I actually use BB112 on my Eastman AR805, that has a Benedetto style ebony bridge, diagonal gradual compensated.
Sometimes I put on Pyramid 12 with wound G-string, and this is easier to tune, keep in tune!, but BB112 is just as fine.
