Which type of mic stand is more stable for a horizontal mic boom? The fold-out tripod legs, or the old stye cast dome?

Legs in any case. The rubber feet also supply a little insulation against footfall sound (i hope this is the correct English term). I used to work at concerts for 18 years and almost never came across a cast dome foot at mic stands of any size.

König & Meyer (K&M) stands are the best and almost all the time used in professional contexts.

EDIT: What is the planned purpose? What mic?

I bought a K&M stand years ago and would buy one again if the need arose. Quality product.

Seconded. They are a little pricey but well worth it if you have a decent mic you need to keep stable. And they are damn cheap compared to the big dog Atlas studio boom.

I just wanted to make a joke about them probably having a good contractor in China but the K&M stuff seems to really be "made in Germany".

And their stuff is damn cheap compared to what some people spend on guitars (no envy intended).
