Because it sounds better and helps you keep time? OTOH there are passages that don’t make sense and warrant other approaches...

Check out the beginning of this video. The guy uses EXTREMELY economical motions in the same way as I described it, and I have nothing to complain about regarding either sound or timing. You will get a lot more noise if you use larger motions, in fact.
