Can someone explain to me why the five fingerings are important and aren't the CAGED system? I've watched Jimmy Bruno's videos and read some posts on it which is what lead me to creating my account in the first place. If i learn these how does it help me as a player? And what are some other things i should learn and try to understand on guitar? Any help is appreciated .

Oh, if you're on Jimmy Bruno's trail you're going to be just fine! Every time I catch one of his videos I just think he might be my favorite; he is an absolutely lovely jazz guitarist.

Some people don't like the CAGED system because the shapes or forms are named after the first position cowboy chords, and they think when using those shapes up the neck those names should not be used because they aren't the right name of what is played up there (a potential confusion). Others seem to be immune to that confusion and can see and hear the shapes apart from the CAGED names (the name of the shape is not the name of the chord using that shape).

Ah I see thanks for the insight on the background of that. I've been watching his videos and stuff and understand some things, but again I fail to understand why these 5 fingerings are vital in relation to practicality. If I learn these how will they help me? What will they allow me to do on the guitar? Where do I go from learning these fingerings? Perhaps not an appropriate question to ask but its worth a shot to asking for any kind souls willing to help lol.

If you'll enter the term "caged" into the forum search engine, you'll find many threads on the topic including comparisons to Bruno's variant of it.
