Wow, that looks just great!
-
That looks stunning but how will it sound with a rosewood body?
Looks a bit like a piece of furniture....LOL!
I'm gasing for an AFJ95 VSB though so if anybody has any hands on experience on these I'd be grateful if you'd share...

That sure is beautiful in an understated way, compared to some other Ibanez offerings with lots of bling. The binding really complements it well.
It must be a laminate, at least the top and back, so I can't see the wood having a huge effect on tone. I guess there's a chance the top and back are pressed.
Only $650! Would like to try one...Last edited by Doctor Jeff; 01-24-2015 at 01:56 PM.

I'm very curious too ... a rosewood top !
Maybe it could yield an interesting tone to blend with the S58s.
Personally i never thought about furniture, i just love rosewood and deep browns, not to mention the smell.
Any rosewood stuff catches my eye.
If i were rich i would have bought an all rose tele as well.
¥698,000!!! 5900! US $ .... GAS(P)!!

Oh, but yes, you're right. I cooled down and realized the same thing :-)

At $650, there's no way it's anything but laminate.
Looks great, Ibanez makes decent guitars in that price range. I'd play it.

I have an AFJ95 with classic 57's in great guitar fabulous neck IMO Ibanez necks beat anyones, the sound is a punchy and smooth ES175 sound, the build quality and fret work is excellent the setup was great straight out of the box, I have much better guitars but I find myself still playing it.

Great guitar !!!! Wow !!
But for that price those must be Super 58 Customs, a $300.00 makeover with Classic 57s or Seth Lovers and you'd never want to play anything else. Gorgeous

The back is at least four pieces of veneer. You can see where they come together. This is absolutely a laminated guitar. A rosewood blank big enough to carve just one of the plates would cost more than what they're selling the entire guitar for.

here's a rosewood archtop back and sides set:

I thought so too but the page says (Ibanez Japan) :

Previous AFJ95 had S58 Custom but maybe they upgraded the line for 2015.

I applied the "para test" to the on-line photos and cannot see any trace of engraving on the PU covers, which suggests that they are not Customs. In fact, it seems as though all the Expressionist series photos are the same, yet the more expensive Artstars still have the engraving, which means they still have Customs. Beats me !
Maybe these are budget MIC Super 58s.Last edited by newsense; 01-24-2015 at 12:36 PM.

Lol, i thought the S58C WERE (with different alnico) budget MIC Super 58s ! Well, it's not the first time Ibanez sows confusion with their pickups on their websites.

Anything below the 100 designation is the ACH pickup (really not very good)
That's been the spec for years.
The rest, lost in translation as they sayLast edited by BigMikeinNJ; 01-24-2015 at 04:29 PM.

I don't know anything about Ibanez pups. What is the deal with Custom versus Super 58s?

Yeah, I just noticed that all the Artstar guitars are topped with header paragraphs which proclaim their great "Super 58 Custom" pickups... and yet each model's spec chart (below) consistently omits the word Custom, simply leaving "Super 58". And yet some of the right-hand 'feature' photos, etc. also show the pickups as being "Super 58s". I clicked on one photo... looked close... no engraving that I was able to see. Have they all been upgraded somehow?
So now I'm confused all over again. Just when I thought they'd finally been trained, there goes the neighborhood.

Some folks on the ibanez forum say that older Super 58 Custom (a.k.a. custom 58) pups can be found with ceramic magnets. An Ibanez rep says recent production pups are all Alnico V. Unfortunately, the part numbers and product markings are the same, so on older pups you must remove the cover to be sure what you have.

Actually, that should be anything below 91. The models in the 90s (AFJ91, AFJ95, etc.) all have Alnico pickups (originally, at least, Super 58 Customs), and I believe always have. For example, that was the only upgrade from the AFJ81 to the otherwise identical original AFJ91.

Its classy. I had a similar Bubinga Ibanez that played like a dream. Pickups were crappy, Was goudy-pretty and I wish I didn't sell it.

I'm not sure of that. I have an AK-95 that has maple over rosewood (sides and back, spruce top) and it's very warm sounding.
