Yes exactly, you got it. So your example would be E7 going to Am, we use A harmonic minor. You would use for D harmonic minor on an A7 in the key of C.

A good example if you know Donna Lee is the run in bar 29 that goes over the chords Ab F7

The notes are actually Eb Db C Bb A Gb F Eb
Which is the C harmonic minor scale

Here's a recent short one that I wrote for the Goodrick cycle group. I'll make it longer but we're going into three part 4ths now.

And this more spacey sounding one from 3 years ago where I experimented with time to create tension ( it goes slightly out of time before the last section before it gets pulled back into time on the first beat of the last section ).
