I'm playing the classic Jim Hall composition for a school combo (guitar, tenor, trumpet, bass) centered around Jim and his music, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the form is on this tune. Bill plays the intro/first part of the melody rubato, then Jim comes in for about 8 bars, then they go into blowing over essentially just Gm and Cm. It sounds like Bill is playing over changes similar to the intro, and then they just kind of solo/interplay for the rest of the track. The original theme does not return. I've checked out the Undercurrent recording + the alternate take, the version from It's Nice to Be With You which is more of a samba, and the original recording by the Modern Jazz Quartet, which have all kind of led me to the same stopping point. I wish there was an original lead sheet or something I could look at. If anyone has learned/arranged this tune and has answers, that would be great!

I transcribed a bunch of this at one time (the Undercurrent version)...let me take a listen and refresh my memory...

Romaine - C Instruments" Sheet Music for Lead Sheet - Sheet Music Now

I'm not familiar with this tune, but looking at the lead sheet sample, it appears they added bars to the head. The A is 18 bars and the B is 24 bars, at least on this sheet. The solos part is behind a paywall, but I'd think they trimmed it down to 2 16 bar sections. Or you could see it as an ABAC form where the second A is up a 5th.

If this is confusing you.... maybe just wait for Jeff to come back. I'm a self taught mess.
