I'm playing the classic Jim Hall composition for a school combo (guitar, tenor, trumpet, bass) centered around Jim and his music, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the form is on this tune. Bill plays the intro/first part of the melody rubato, then Jim comes in for about 8 bars, then they go into blowing over essentially just Gm and Cm. It sounds like Bill is playing over changes similar to the intro, and then they just kind of solo/interplay for the rest of the track. The original theme does not return. I've checked out the Undercurrent recording + the alternate take, the version from It's Nice to Be With You which is more of a samba, and the original recording by the Modern Jazz Quartet, which have all kind of led me to the same stopping point. I wish there was an original lead sheet or something I could look at. If anyone has learned/arranged this tune and has answers, that would be great!
