1966 Gibson Tal Farlow

I know there's a post about this guitar somewhere on the forum, but I thought I'd list it here as well. The guitar looks and plays great - has the original patent number pickups which sound wonderful - at some previous point, a Charlie Christian pickup was installed in the neck position - the original neck pickup is now re-installed (with a newer cover) and the holes from the CC pickup's screw mounts have been nicely plugged. New chrome waffle back tuners now replace the Schallers someone had previously installed - a strap button was added at the heel - all other parts are original.

The nut is 1&9/16" - frets have been leveled and re-crowned and action is super slick. The neck and peghead have been over-sprayed to repair some minor finish wear. The body had some open checking and has also been over-sprayed to seal against moisture absorption. Some of the checking is still visible but the finish is smooth.

The guitar comes with a TKL hardshell case - shows some wear but its solid. Asking price is $9200 but offers will be considered.

A buddy of mine had listed this guitar on ebay/reverb for me - originally asking 9200, now reduced to 8950 - technically I own the guitar and would like to get it sold (to pay for another guitar, of course - lol) - if anyone here is interested in this guitar at $7500, let me know.

Yeah - as mentioned, I did some clear nitro over-spray, but the color is original - Gibson's "Viceroy Brown" finish - the TF was the only artist model to be done in that color. A detailed description of the guitar can be seen in the eBay listing:

Yeah, that's more like their ice tea finish - I've seen the reissues also in dark vintage burst and wine red. Looks like they're using black knobs, too - the knobs on the original version were brown.

Tals like all other Gibsons went narrow nut mid '65.
You're probably thinking of Johnny Smiths which were always wide.

I think even the Johnny Smith's got a bit narrow too just not the 9/16th but 1 11/16? Not sure but have seen JSG's listed with that figure from the late 60's.

What the hell was going on in the guitar playing world to cause this narrow isthmus of neck that happened?

I’m pretty sure the Johnnys have always had the 1 3/4” nut, as he considered that a very important spec. To me, that’s reason enough to play one, the only classic Gibson Archtop with a modern nut width.

Interestingly , I played Johnny’s famous D’A recently, and the nut was somewhat narrower than that, so go figure…

I have never seen a Gibson Johnny Smith with a nut width that was anything other that 1 3/4”.

I have seen original TF’s selling in $10-15K range.

Mark when I told Doyle I had a TF he stopped in his tracks and asked if it was an original. You might want to show it to him when he visits. He has big time GAS too.
