While Hutch signed labels can predate shipping serial numbers by a few years as is the case with my L5 1934 Reissue, a twenty year gap between construction in the custom shop and allocation of a serial number when the guitar was shipped is very puzzling. Was this Tal Farlow misplaced for some reason?
Probably just a goof up, the same person who switched the Gibson and Style wording also wrote a 2 instead of a zero.

I have edited my post to show that Gibson changed their system for carved top guitars in 2000 where the first digit would be a 2.

Custom shop serialization can be very confusing. In the 2000s they made the first number a 2 in the archtops. That was the case for carved top guitars AND laminate CS guitars like the Tal. The last number for the year continued to be in the usual spot, so when you see a 2 and a 3 in the classic Gibson serial number locations (YDDDYXXX) it indicates 2003. There were some reissue archtops that had different, special serialization schemes though, making things even more confusing.

Here’s another example. This Tal is a 2005. Note that the 2 and 5 indicate 2005, not 2025.

I had the same WT* moment with my 2005 L5CES. Thought it was a '25 when I bought it in '24!!

I got to take lessons in high School from Brian who does all these musician friends demos. I can tell on this one that he liked these Tals exceptionally well. He’s pretty easy to read in some of these where he’s like meh…. But he spent extra time playing this one from enjoyment rather than obligation

    Jsparr1983,
I agree. It appears Brian had fun doing this demo.
