Having completed this custom spec piece from my last batch, I’m putting it up for sale – it’s a one-off guitar with some very special features – the top is a NOS Gibson L7 plate carved and braced by Gibson – the back and rims are made from heavily figured eastern hard “blister” maple (Gibson used a lot of blister maple back in the 30’s – 50’s, but it’s difficult to find these days, and such intensely figured stock is very rare).
Other features include large block position markers, custom peghead inlay and multiple bindings throughout. The floating pickup is a Lollar JS with thumbwheel volume and tone controls. Fingerboard scale is 25.5”, nut width is 1&11/16”, neck has a smooth “C” shape with depth of .820” @1st fret/.940” @10th fret. Ships in a TKL Pro Series case - asking 9K

There are two photos of what appears to be Gibson tops above, one braced, the other with no braces. One is marked L7, the other not marked, and they have different serial numbers. Is one from a different build, or what is the story? Just curious...

The two photos are of the same top - one of the outside, one of the inside - I'm not sure what the various stamped numbers signify.

Ah, okay, the perspective and different colors fooled me. Color is always an issue with photos across the internet.

A Gibson Johnny Smith / LeGrand on steroids.
A big Congrats to the smart buyer.

That guitar is a masterpiece and one of a kind.

Mark built me a one of a kind but had to promise never to show it because of a joint venture with another builder.

I love it when Mark steps out of his box.

    Sweeeeeet !

Congrats SilkySteve! I have a 16" Campellone that was built with a 50s Gibson NOS L4 top, and it is a spectacular instrument in every way. I'm sure yours will exceed your expectations! If this one had a fatter neck, I might have pulled the trigger on it, lol.

Thank you, GuitarJay! So that’s very cool to know Mark has done something like this before with a Gibson NOS top. I assume your Campellone is a Florentine, to use the L-4 top, of course. That’s unusual for Mark, judging from his online gallery. My ebony 2006 L-4 CES Mahogany has an extremely rare bound headstock. I’d love to acquire others like this.

It was very tempting! My barn is full right now, no room at the Inn.
It really is my cup of tea. Beautiful work Mark! Congratulations to the new owner!

Like the NOS L7 top, the L4 top I used for GuitarJay came to me with just a rough cut perimeter, with no cutaway.
