I was recently put on to his solo on Anthropology and have been on a deep dive ever since. Best rhythm changes solo I've ever heard on guitar. Reminds me of Bud Powell and Wes Montgomery...so young too. Monster player.

Latest treasure trove I've stumbled upon from him. Here he is playing several standards in a trio with a great electric bassist and drummer.

It's like every phrase that comes out of him is PERFECT...unreal

The female guitarist in the first one, Fumika Asari, has a great album "Thanks for Emily" check her out too.

I love how she ends her solo with the chords from the Mickey Baker book's Rhythm Changes lesson. Just great.

Oh yeah she's definitely no slouch, but I'm starting to get damn near evangelical for my guy lol. Beautiful bebop phrases for days and what a pretty tone he gets. I haven't been this moved/inspired by a player in a long time.

If you like Koichi's style then also listen to Yoshiaki Okayasu, who was his former teacher.

Phenomenal players. I’ll never play jazz like that, sadly, but it’s great to listen and watch.

I like this more than the OP’s vid. Drummer has a really nice feel. Organ purring along nicely. Great guitar work, yet to my ears he’s close to overplaying. He’s blazing lick after lick, all high octane and some light and shade would work better for me. His technique and vocabulary are stellar, regardless of age. He’s got access to some mighty fine guitars, btw.

It’s incredible how fast young people can learn these days if they immerse themselves. At 20 they already seem to be fully formed sometimes. I’ll never be anywhere near this level.

Anthropology is such a masterpiece, and diving into that solo is like uncovering hidden treasure! The way he navigates those rhythm changes is pure magic, reminiscent of the legends like Bud Powell and Wes Montgomery. It's incredible how someone so young can command the guitar with such mastery. Truly a monster player, leaving us all in awe.

What a friggin' monster. I don't know of any other guitarist in the oldish style with such impeccable fluidity in melody, harmony and time.

James, this is the link you want. Murphy's made a playlist of all the ittle bits on YouTube of Koichi.

Thanks. I want to listen to Hirata'a version and see if I have a new favorite of one of my favorite bebop tunes. (other than this classic one).
