Don't think we've done anything like this for a while...so why not?
No explanations necessary unless you want to, only rule is: jazz guitar players. Who's in your top 10? Don't have to be in order, either...
For me, not really in any order...
1. Grant Green
2. Jimmy Raney
3. Jim Hall
4. Kenny Burrell
5. Ray Crawford
6. Bobby Broom
7. John Abercrombie
8. Charlie Christian
9. Bill Frisell
10. Ed Bickert
My list is pretty old school, I guess...kinda funny, my listening taste is generally a bit more modern, but I don't really listen to the modern stuff specifically for guitar.

I usually avoid these but it's been awhile, I'll play along even though I'll probably leave someone out.
in NO order except #1
Wes
Pat Martino
Charlie Christian
Barney Kessel
Billy Bean
Jimmy Raney
Jim Hall
Kenny Burrell
Rene Thomas
Grant Green
honorable mention Tal Farlow, Joe Pass and Benson. it was hard leaving them off.
I'm leaving out some of the old school acoustic cats I love like Eddie Lang, Van Eps, Carl Kress, Dick McDonough etc
Also Johnny Smith, as he's not a true jazz guitarist imo, though he's way up there as far as guitarists in my mind, period.Last edited by wintermoon; 03-25-2021 at 03:03 PM.

This is going to be difficult. I had to cheat and do 11. I could not leave one off, but I am definitely leaning modern on this list...
In no order:
- Scofield
- Wes
- Peter Bernstein
- Julian Lage
- Bill Frissell
- Jim Hall
- Grant Green
- Kenny Burrell
- Gilad Hekselman

As it relates to Jazz only and not necessarily in order after KB:
Wes (1)
Kenny Burrell (1A)
Royce Campbell
Lee Ritenour
Alessio Menconi
Joe Passalaqua
Chuck Loeb
Steve Laury
René Thomas
Herb Ellis
-
Midnight blues reminded me about Rene Thomas, how could I forget him? list amended.
-
John Scofield

Joe Pass
Jim Hall
Django Reinhard

I did it off the top of my head without looking at others' posts. I could fit a few more in there as well. There are guitarists like Pat Martino and Barney Kessel and Jimmy Bruno and Al Dimeola whom I love, but the above are who I listen to the most.
And there are guitarists like Charlie Christian and Oscar Moore whom I love and respect, but not on my regular playlist.
-
Charlie Christian
Barney Kessel

Tal Farlow
Wes Montgomery
George Benson
Jim Hall
Jimmy Raney
Joe Pass

Charlie Christian
Jim Hall
Billy Bean
Doug Raney
Nelson Symonds

My list of jazz guitar influences is actually way too long and diverse to make any sense really. It would basically read as a condensed history of jazz guitar.
Might be quicker to make a list of players I don’t think have influenced me much if AT ALL (no reflection on how good I think they are, they are all great, just haven’t influenced me much.)
my anti influences
- Pat Metheny
- George Benson
- Kenny Burrell
- Al Di Meola
actually that might be it...
-
Also does anyone else go through phases? Like just getting into one player’s approach for about six months.

Then, in no particular order, guitarists who have impressed and/or influenced me:
Carlos Santana *
Chico Pinheiro
EVH *
BB King *
Guinga
Mark Knopfler
Well, that's eight. Every one has a distinctive, immediately recognizable, style.
The asterisks are the guys I think affected my playing. Not necessarily in an ordinary way. I can't play a single note like EVH, but there was something about the way he floated over the time which had an impact. With BB it was the drama created by silence and stinging notes. With Santana it was raw power, with Jim Hall, exquisite taste. Chico is the full package. I can't grasp his solo technique, which is a mix of incredible chops, ears, imagination and magic; I especially love the way he can drive a band from the guitar chair with jet propelled comping.
Wes isn't one of them, not because I don't love his music, but because I couldn't begin to assimiliate what he did. Similarly, for some of the others. I wish they weren't over my head, but that's where they were.
EDIT: Players I didn't think of at first:
Joe Beck (not well known, I guess, but a masterful jazz guitarist).
Vic Juris - Another non-household name, but what a player.
George Van Eps - In his era, he was the guy the other players were in awe of.
Toninho Horta - he plays a 6 string guitar in conventional tuning, but it sure sounds differentLast edited by rpjazzguitar; 03-27-2021 at 03:48 PM.

The order is always changing, as I go through some real heavy phases with all of these players!
Charlie Christian
Julian Lage
Eddie Lang
Dick McDonough
Django Reinhardt
Bill Frisell
Jonathan Stout
Duved Dunayevsky
Tk Smith (sort of jazzy?)
Jim Hall
Lots of those country jazzers would be on the list as well, Jimmy Bryant, Hank Garland, Jim Campilongo, Billy Byrd, Junior Barnard, and so many more!

Some great names (and a few new names, too)!
Looking around my room at the stacks of CDs, and not in any order, this appears to be my list:
John Scofield
Mike Stern
Jim Hall
Peter Bernstein
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Nate Radley
Steve Cardenas
Chris Crocco
Adam Rogers
Mick Goodrick
Of course, as soon as I "submit" this, I'll probably think of someone else to add!
