I'm enjoying listening to Kenny Burrell on Youtube and I want to get a few of his albums.

Midnight Blue is an obvious choice but are there any other "must have" albums?

    These will get you started:

    Round Midnight
    Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane
    Lotus Blossom
    God Bless The Child
    A Night At The Vanguard

Gotta have All Day Long and All Night Long.

They're all good albums. Some of his stuff w/Jimmy Smith is way too heavily orchestrated for my taste (vey '60s feel, just like a lot of Wes' stuff) but I still have to have it. 'Round Midnight is killer.

If you like Midnight Blue then check out Freedom that was recorded shortly before.

+10 on the suggestions above (particularly Round Midnight. I didn't realise there was much love for that album, glad to see it's appreciated by others!)

    Also, Recapitulation is very good.

    And Asphalt Canyon Blues.

A Generation Ago Today was reissued by Verve as For Charlie and Benny a few years ago but now may be out of print.

Blues...The Common Ground and The Duke Ellington volumes are also good.

Basically, just buy all of them.

    Just ordered this today:

Be Yourself: Live at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Kenny Burrell, Music CD - Barnes & Noble

Here's another I have on vinyl but you can get the CD:

The Cats, Kenny Burrell, Music CD - Barnes & Noble

This is the first Kenny Burrell recording I ever purchased, though I can't seem to find anyplace you can get it now:

    Kenny Burrell – Generation

Not to be confused with "A Generation Ago Today". Bobby Broom and Rodney Jones are on it as well.

All the other suggestions here are great and I'll second the CD with Trane; it's awesome.

I LOVE "Lotus Blossom". Can't find a tab or sheet music anywhere. Anyone know where to find it?

I was gonna say "All Day Long" too!

That recording has the most laid back groove of any recording in my known universe. Great driving cruise tune, too.

I'm glad someone else knows that one!

Prestige had a thing going with the all_______long albums...All Morning long (sans KB but with red garland and trane) is another must have!

But I'm gonna get that ADL/ANL two-fer, Mr. B. It's just too good to pass up! Thx!

Whoa! Burrell and Coltrane did a record together but it didn't include "Tenor Madness." (Coltrane did that with Sonny Rollins.) Coltrane and Burrell did the definitive version of Tommy Flannigan's "Freight Trane" on that record, as well as "Big Paul" and "I Never Knew." (And "Lyresto," as you mentioned.)

I am not sure which albums they are but two tunes really send me...

Jimmy Smith and Kenny doing Fever

Grover Washington Jr. and Kenny doing Summertime....

Fever is from the LP (CD) Blue Bash
Summertime is from the Burrell/Washington CD Togethering.
Kenny Burrell is a monster player, and to my ears, possibly the finest Jazz Blues guitar player.
He does have a huge discography though, and there are, perhaps, releases which are of more interest to Jazz guitar fans than others, which emphasize his vocals or more commercial material.
    For me, some essentials would include;
    Blue Lights Vol 1&2,
    A Night At The Vanguard,
    Soul Call.
    I've bought a lot of Kenny's CD's, I could recommend plenty more.

Yeah, that's what I got. Lots of good stuff. One favorite on there is co-led with Jimmy Raney. Called 2 Guitars, I think.
