That said, maybe it’s more like Allan’s earlier playing.

I was thinking more like Allan Holdsworth 1972 with Ian Carr.

I saw Holdsworth and Ollie Halsall play together live in the band Tempest at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in May 1973, Tempest's debut concert. Allan and Ollie were stylistically similar at that point - at least in terms of playing blindingly fast legato lines (I was already a fan of Halsall, and saw him play live with the band Patto a number of times). Holdsworth, of course, subsequently went on to stake out much more harmonically complex territory.
