Here's mine. It was a great experience. I've never really recorded myself before and am very dependent on backing tracks so this was hard. I have a lot to work on (especially rhythm). I know I suggested this song but don't take that to mean I play it a lot. I wrote "out of nowhere" in the post, so that reminded me of the song.
This was an ovation acoustic, no pick, a crappy mp3 recorder, a phone metronome, uploaded with a chromebook.
Comments would be welcome!Last edited by danwaineo; 11-14-2014 at 03:28 AM.

Referring to me, Bud?
You call those recordings to backing tracks and what I have heard so far "the game"? You are kidding, right?
I'm going to show up. With a two track recording. No backing tracks. Two guitar tracks that you create - one rhythm/bass and another lead track to a high hat click. You can choose your tempo. Naked guitar to a click.
I suspect Jeff will deliver. Vintage did a nice little recording, but then again there was that backing track. Melody, rhythm, tempo and timing. You need to do it all yourself. Naked guitar, man.
After I do the game day recording, I'll do a second one with a vocal added. Just for the fun. A bonus from a "non-professional".
But I have to learn the song first.
You know, normally I do not stoop to personal attacks. But I guess that rule does not apply to everyone. Someone here need to learn a lesson about humility. Even the pros...and I sure hope Rich makes an appearance. He has been super sweet and kind in my regard. Or maybe "sweet and kind" is not the right description. I'll have to link to his charming post. Good thing we have moderators who are even handed in this regard. (sarcasm font off)

Once again it was auto correction error that typed "you play bad." I'm really sorry about that. Supposed to be NOT BAD. I was line line at the pharmacy. If you read it again with that proviso maybe that will change the flavor? I'm not one to be rude. If it's still rude to you after that I don't know what to say. I've also gotta be honest.
But please stop with the bullshit challenges. BUD??? Listen man, you need a real attitude adjustment because I think you're starting to go over the edge here. Why in the hell would I or anyone be interested in doing a music game with you, you setting up the ground rules WHEN YOU STILL HAVENT DELIVERED WHAT YOU PROMISED LONG AGO? And what you posted still doesn't demonstrate any jazz playing ability.
-
Well that's just mean.

Excuses? I'm not making excuses right now. I'm going to learn the song tonight. Record the song tomorrow and Sunday as I fight for computer time and a little silence.
The only excuses I'm hearing here now are not coming from me. But, then again, I didn't berate you or Rich or Jeff or anyone else. I did not question your honesty and integrity. I did not suggest that you fantasize you are a musician, or as Rich suggested, that you take up woodworking or whatever the hell the charming fellow Rich said. But excuse me, as I have to go listen to Sonny Stitt. Got to learn the tune after all if you want to play ball.
Best regards, Jay

Henry, you and Rich and some comments from others just rubbed me the wrong way.
If you are sincere about your apology, I accept. And I'm not into pissing contests either. But everything I ever said on this forum is not only sincere and truthful, but also not intended to knock anyone else nor put them down to bolster my ego or to give vent to some kind of bizarre rage (Rich).
Plain and simple. I intend to record two tracks of Out Of Nowhere, a song that is not in my repertoire - yet. By tomorrow it will be. Naked guitar - rhythm and lead - to a hi-hat click so you can hear the timing. Nothing to prove to anyone. Just for fun.
You do what you want. And you can criticize the recording all you like. We will see who can hang and who shows up. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. After all, you are a professional. Board certified, I imagine.

I don't criticize people's recordings or efforts unless they ask me directly. That's why I apologize profusely for the faux pas.

I didn't see richb's comment. Was it pulled?
jay - it's like your ego is way out of proportion. This isn't even your thread and has nothing to do with you but you've managed to turn this into the Jay show. Can he play or can't he? It's more than a little ridiculous.

I think he's talking about older comments. This thread goes way back.

I went back and recorded a rhythm track but unfortunately there was so much of the backing track bleeding onto the lead (because to record that, I stuck the laptop in front of the amp and hit record) it was unusable. Both the lead and the backing track were on a single track.
I don't get the big deal with "naked", it's pretty easy to walk a bass line while playing chords and keep in time... It was just easiest for me to stick the laptop in front of the amp and use the backing track as a metronome.
I would appreciate any feedback of what you did or didn't like. Thanks

I thought it sounded good. The only thing I would work on is rhythmic variety. You have a steady stream of notes in your solo. I think it would be better if you worked more on phrasing.

My ego is out of proportion? Really? Maybe after I post a musical version of the song in question, your doubts will be assuaged. (Look it up, Rich.)
Yes, this post has been diverted into a rolling joke about me not posting. Well, joke time is over. It's time to make some real music. And I really do have to get the song together. After all, I'll need to use CST and modal references and harmonic analysis to understand the implications of what notes I play....... ........
........or maybe I'll just play it by ear.
Love and kisses - Jay
PS - Henry, "Bud" was in reference to "inwalkedbud" - I just shortened the handle - I'm not sure if his name is Bud or he is referring to cannabis. Either one is ok with me....

I 've seen the strangest things in forums. Some time ago a member in a cycling forum told us of a private race with another member, who confirmed the story and said that the other is by far better than himself. Everyone was impressed until it turned out that the two were one and the same person with a double account and the story was invented!
BTW, even an acoustic recording with metronome proves nothing! You could still have been wearing a headset with a playalong...
-
Boo, you're reading my mind, over the internet. Kudos!
BTW, Jay DeLuca's Soundclick clips while not really working for me, should be quite enough to stop all the fuss about Targuit's claims.
- I'm uncomfortable with names mismatch, Targuit vs. Jay DeLuca, but Jay = Jay, so let it be. All that has nothing to do with what I was thinking when I gave kudos to Boo, above. I had some completely different ideas in that regard. -
Anyway, now there is a reference, and each time Targuit speaks we can read it with an perspective. For all the playing, singing, ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
City Lights - I know how hard it is to play MIDI guitar, so all timing issues were expected. IMO, It's better than average, live/ real time, MIDI guitar timing. I just wonder why it was not edited/ quantized?
Composition wise, except for the stiff plain drums, I think it resembles New Orleans style quite well, lines are in style and all, but sounds were a bit inappropriate, adding to a sense of cacophony. Less airy, more acoustic like sounds would kept it more firm and structured, which would be better, in spite of clashing notes could became more obvious.
My Destiny - Nice song. Doubled vocals did not work. Voice is fine, but far from jaw dropping. Guitar playing is adequate for the style, but again with clashing parts btw 2 guitars, both rhythmicaly and harmonically. However, all played parts and ideas, they work for me individually, on their own.
All in all, Targuit (Jay DeLuca) is talented, but an amateur. If he could work for several hours a day on his skills, he'd be on par with usual everyday professional musician.
I have no doubt his Jazz takes will be of the same quality. Quite good, but lacking in timing and structure, which is only tameable and attainable by rigorous exercise and regular practice, all of which is not what he does, having day job and all that.

Thank you for the analysis, Vladan, which is fairly spot on.
The clips on Sound Click were recorded to tight deadlines and without benefit of editing or revision or even retakes. What some would call "excuses" I call the facts about how and under what circumstances the recordings were created. And they suffer from lack of editing, overplaying, lack of definition....one can go on and on. With City Lights the composition was created as I was recording, one track at a time. My Destiny was written and recorded within less than 18 hours - actually less, given that I wrote it at 4:00 AM , went to work still revising lyrics, recorded it after work and dinner, and tried to upload it to meet a midnight deadline for submission. It shows, especially as I have no computer DAW to edit and clean stuff up. Everything is virtually a "live" take.
I've pretty much given up using the Roland GR-20 for recording because of the latency issue which is impossible to correct or compensate for. In fact I regret spending money on it, but for use with note entry in real time with my notation program. I find it really just an expensive toy, and I wish I had the money back.
In any case, this early morning I learned Out Of Nowhere. Between now and Sunday I will record it and put it up on Sound Cloud - at least that is my intention. I still cannot edit really with the Korg, so it will be "live" takes. And just two classical guitar tracks which should be less cluttered and more clear in articulation. We'll see.

@Vladan Thanks!

I forgot why I told the story: Of course the thread changed it´s direction after the member made some bold and strange statements. The question came up wether he is a real racer or a lame duck, wether he is a real pro or an amateur without any knowledge about the pro business.
He was also asked to provide proof that he knows whereof he speaks. So for me, this thread is almost a Déjà vu. But I hope that this time it does not end so...

Sheesh.....
Have any of you guys ever actually BEEN on a snipe hunt?

I played the backing track on a laptop into the behringer keyboard amp I have, then comped into a looper, and did a track over that. The looper goes into a princeton reverb clone I built, which both amplifies the looper and my guitar--the organ effect is probably due to the reverb on the amp, and that the whole thing was then recorded by the sound recorder on the laptop.

matt - what is up with you anyway? A snipe hunt? Look, if you have something to say to me, man up and speak directly. I put up two old originals - a Sound Click link - from 2010 or so. And I'm going to try and record something this weekend that I learned last night - Out of Nowhere. If I say it is my intention, it is because I have to have some quiet in the house, access to my home PC, and the most important commodity - time. I have professional responsibilities of patient care. Not an excuse - a fact of life. Takes up about fifty hours or so of my week, including weekends.
I suggest you join in and post your recording of the tune. Some here are willing to do so, others not. Some have already posted. You are invited to participate. Not a cutting contest, but if you need to hear someone's playing to judge the grounds for their opinions or advice, this is an equal opportunity. I would like to hear your playing. I would also like to put out the fires of doubt which apparently burn in the minds of some . How's that for a metaphor...overblown, right?
Truthfully, I would prefer to return to just posting on music and Jazz rather than deal with that. That is all there is to it. Maybe I could even get a gig or two? Probably not.
Jay.

True, but it seems challenging, since you have to match the metronome to the playalong in your headset.
