Wonderful thread, making me feel a little dizzy. Sometimes I find clarity by reversing perspective (I do a lot of things backwards).

If CST suggests the chords first and the theory is the application of scales to them, the reverse perspective (SCT) is to start with a melodic structure comprising scale (arp) elements and seeking a progression segment for their application.

For example, play a melodic thing that you would identify as a piece of whole-half diminished followed by another piece of whole-half diminished a half step lower; so like a bar of Bb WHdim followed by a bar of A WHdim. Can you find a progression segment (not a modulation) for that? Do you recognize a tune(s) that has this harmonic change? Does the tune(s) support this melodic structure?

I have noticed that my use of altered scales is more creative when I'm in an altered state of consciousness - funny how that works.
