There are a bunch of other tunes where they do the same thing, following the V of ii chord with the IV chord. It must have been a thing that the piano player was into in the 60s or thereabouts.
I also found it interesting that on "Love For Sale, they stay on the i minor chord for 8 bars at the top of the tune. When George Russell wrote his contrafact on LFS, "Ezzthetic", he used the same chord change there. It must have been the way the boppers played it before people started on the IV7 chord later on
One good thing about the backing tracks is that they really train your ear to recognize when you deviate from the Vanilla changes. When you play a note that doesn't fit those changes, it sticks out like a sore thumb. If they used hipper changes, you could play any notes you want to, and it's not as noticeable as it is with the simpler changes.
Well, the subdominant chords, II & IV, can sub for one another, just as both the V & VII chords can function as dominant chords, and the IVmaj is just the upper structure of the IIm7, but how you voice a chord can make all the difference.

This is not merely vanilla, it's wrong. Cole Porter's changes provide color for the static melody there (there are only three notes, Bb, F & G, in the entire 8 bars).

The one where they do psychedelic camera effects whenever he plays guitar… No thanks.

Look man, if you can’t make sacrifices for your art, you’re never gonna make it in this business

I have his two hot licks DVDs already. What’s possibly on that which I don’t already have?

Also, you can’t refer to an hour long instructional video as an exercise.

It's just that 5-note-per-string,alt. picking exercise on a pseudo-chromatic scale I posted a few months ago.

I do have a knee jerk negative reaction sometimes. So I thought I was just being unreasonable.

Oh, it’s just spider drills and economy picking. Yeah SGCIM, Reg recommends these.

No, the way I do it is pure alt. picking. He said you could cheat, and use economy picking, but I don't do it that way.
The amp blowing up was hilarious Irish Musso!

At those tempos we don't think just react. The muscles have to already be trained because the brain while it can hear and do things much faster than the muscles, they must be together.

He says specifically not to spend time doing it alternate picking.

No, he warned players to not try to play it too fast using alternate picking, and then showed how you could "cheat" by playing it using economy picking, and play it faster. Like the Deacon said, it's a way to train your brain and both hands to be in sync. It's just an exercise, not a speed technique.

Why would you insist on using a Reimann sum when we have discovered integrals?

It’s not cheating, it’s just a better way.

I have brain fog from social isolation so I have to learn to think faster.

He referred to it as "cheating". He said the alt. picking way was so hard that he never used that on a gig. Then he tries to play it fast and messes it up a bunch of times.
DG came up with that exercise to improve his alt picking over bar lines; playing it the other way is fine, but it's not going to help you dealing with switching from string to string using alt. picking.

Oh I see, I didn't understand the context of what you were saying. Egg on my face
