To find out what the fuss is all about, I've been running standalone modeling / simulation apps on my old Toshiba laptop. I'm trying the free versions of Guitar Rig, AmpliTube, and Amplion and will write up a comparison when I have enough experience with them all to say something useful.

I've been happy using JBL 305 powered monitors as FRFR boxes. The lack of a handle and a grille is a potential problem on gigs, but you can velcro them inside a slightly larger container (e.g. milk crate) to solve both. I've also used my Edifier 1280 powered monitors this way, running USB into the onboard DAC rather than using the analog output from the laptop. The JBLs are pretty loud - but if you need more, they also make 306s and 307s that will pump out higher even higher SPL.

What we need is something that sounds as good as a studio monitor but has the power, dispersion, and durability of a PA speaker. At a musician friendly price point. Schertler gear is the closest I've found but it's pricey.
