Tonight in Helsinki is today over the Pond. Kurt Rosenwinkel starred in a two-part concert, the first set with the UMO big band and the second in a quartet featuring saxophonist Seamus Blake, drummer Joe Peri and bassist Kaisa Mäensivu ( a TOOB artist btw), who's also the Artistic Director of the Savoy Jazz Festival.
I had heard Kurt some nine years ago in Berlin. This time his sound was even more processed. With the highly orchestrated big band, he almost sounded as one of the sax players. In the quartet, his playing was just sublime. The guitar - against my D'A expectations - was a Yamaha SG200. A lot of electronics on the floor; some of you might recognize some of the gear from the closeup photo. Instead of a traditional amp, two largish, raised PA speakers behind him. Apologies from the Taiga if all this is common knowledge.

I hope You enjoyed the concert. I noticed it too, but our kids have a winter holiday so I devoted this week and weekend to my family. And skiing.
Instead of the concert I have listened Rosenwinkel’s newish album Angels Around. I like it a lot, at the moment it is about my favourite Rosenwinkel album.
His sound is very processed in it too. But somehow in an organic way. Sometimes his guitar sounds more like a sax or a cello or a violin. Not in an ’80s guitar synth way but just quite naturally.
Maybe the synthetic sounds means louder volume – specially with a big band – and then the solid body guitar is more convenient?

I just was watching this you-tube of him. Interesting for those following the "Les Paul Guitar in Jazz" thread as he is using a Les Paul black Custom:

I used to have a Yamaha SG-1000 in black I imported Japan about a year or so ago. Seriously sweet guitar that was a bit heavy but to me was very comfortable. Always got some oohs and aahs when I pulled it out. Sold it as I had some bills and it needed fret work I didn't want to worry about at the time.

I miss the young and thin Kurt Rosenwinkel.

I have not noticed any major difference between the music of younger and contemporary Rosenwinkel. Is there some?
