I have a Radack "S" type with Lollar Dirty blondes. I get (to my ears) a nice jazz tone in the 4th (quack) position. It's softer than the neck only 5th. I can back off the tone and volume with the neck pup and get a nice tone too but I prefer the neck/ middle combo. Play through a BFDR early '65 and an old 52 Gibson GA20. Only pedal (for soft jazzy stuff) is a Strymon Flint (reverb) with the Gibby. If I dabbled in fusion I might use an OD like a HotCake or BB Preamp with an analog delay of some sort.

All great advice here. The tone controls on the amp, pick and string suggestions are most helpful. My 2 cents to add would be to consider that there is just not one “jazz tone.” Playing with fingers significantly mellows out the tone. Sometimes turning your pick to use the rounded part of the triangle produces a fuller, but more mellowed tone. Different tunes often ask for a different technique.

If you like your Strat and also use it to play rock, etc., consider keeping it and getting a second guitar if you can afford it. If you still like to play the other stuff, you’ll miss the Srat.
