You think that's nuts, imagine finding this Guild Artist Award in the trash (actual guitar):

well, I got 2 guitars I use a lot:
- one solid body Godin LGXT out of which I get a decent jazz sound, and actually a lot of interesting sounds. Quiet a versatil guitar this one.
- one accoustic flat top seagull, really nice to take on the roof terrasse in summer
or just for noodling in the living room.
Then still got my first electic guitar (a charvel/jackson) which is a very basic cheap guitar (I still don't know what to do with it..been in the closet for almost 2 years now), and also another accoustic in a so-so shape that I got at my parents home for when I go visit.
I'm really looking at the achtops... but I'm afraid to stop playing the godin if I do buy one.
Seriously, for those who have lots of guitar, do you manage to use them all on a regular basis ? Or do you have your favorite on which you spent 90% of your time ?
(of course I understand the need to have more insrtuments for professional musiciens, to use as backup... I'm just talking about the hobby side here)

I've only got 5 guitars:
A Tele,
A thinline semi-hollow,
An acoustic/electric hybrid,
A Martin acoustic,
An acoustic travel guitar (w/piezo).
I (feel that) I need them all, but if I had to, I could get by with just the Tele and the travel guitar.

you mean, apart from all the cool new gear?

Mine all get played regularly. Besides the occasional gig, I play with informal groups and at church: some want me to bring a Dobro, some think I'm the community bass player, and there are those who mistake me for a lead guitarist. These are organized around friends who sing, or who are songwriters and want their songs fleshed out, or arise from the need for something different for the anthem on Sunday. Don't forget harmonica, which I take to jams.

...because monogamy only applies in my married life.
I agree with BDLH as well--there's different guitars to cover different territories. But I also have three telecasters. WTF?
Well, the tele is a style I'm comfortable with, so I have three teles set up differently. My main tele is a hodgepodge of several guitars, and is set up for jazz. I have a 50's classic set up the same which is intended to be a direct backup to this guitar. I also have a '72 custom which is currently set up for rock/blues/country gigs, whatewver comes down the pipe.
I have the Godin Kingpin which covers my trad. archtop needs.
I have my recently acquired yamaha silent guitar for nylon string sounds (I also have a cheap classical that needs some TLC to get back in good working order)
I have my old seagull for flattop acoustic needs.
And a few odds and ends for special purposes--an old supro 12 string, a danelectro set up for slide (i like the old junkos), a cheap selmer-style that's my campfire guitar. So why do I have all of these?
Because I do. There's not a guitar in the lot (save for my main tele) that's worth over 1K, and that's okay. They're tools, they get a job done.
If somebody told me tomorrow that I had to get by with only two, the choice would be easy....but why make that choice if I don't have to!

Less than 2?? How about less than 10?? (and still no!!)
D'Angelico New yorker NYL-5 (main archtop)
Epiphone Joe Pass (first archtop, modded, used as back up)
Luna Guitars Athena Semi-Solid (impulse purchase, perfect fusion guitar)Ibanez AS73 (335 style, not used much if I'm honest, could sell)
Fender USA Strat Plus (played once in the last 2 years; could sell)
Squier Tele (for G tuning)
Gibson (I hope!!) SG Melody Maker (also heavily modded, E tuning)
Unnamed lap steel.
Yamaha Silent Nylon String
Epiphone Orville Electro-Acoustic (main workhorse "round the house" guitar)
Washburn Dreadnaught Acoustic
Beaten up Spanish Guitar (my first ever guitar, can hardly play but sentimental reasons)
Dobro-style resonator guitar
plus access to my son's Squier bass and Strat if needed.
You could take most of the cheapies and added together they wouldn't be worth the value of the NYL-5, which is my pride and joy. I could trim down very easily and probably will shed a few sometime soon, but it's not something over which I'm going to worry. Most of them are for fun only, which is as good a reason as any.

I got rid of everything I don't play or use in terms of jazz guitars and amps and am very happy with that--I have more than two, but everything I have, I want to keep for life and have no need for G.A.S. to arise. I'm happy with what I have.
That said, but still have stuff I call "accessories", that I have to think about paring down:
a cheapo classical, a moderately priced but still on the cheapo end thinline flamenco,a banjo, and a dobro. Will I ever really play these or use 'em for recording? Maybe. I need to think about this.
The one guitar I will not get ride of an old Gianini Brazilian nylon--it was the 1st guitar I ever bought, it's been through the wars, a friend of mine even smashed the headstock and the binding (repaired, since then). Sentimental value. Still sounds good (not much of a bass).

Well it is hard. I cant see me without 4 guitars. A good flat top. A good archtop. A good electric. And my Ibanez. Once I get rid of all the crap I will reevaluate my priorities.
Flattop: Dont have a good one but have a good enough for now. I just beat it around the house anyway
Archtop: Well my 165 is doing the job admirablyfor now. I wasnt in love with it when I got it so I am not worried about honeymoon syndrome. I am new to jazz guitar so we will see how it goes.
Electric: I cant see me selling my JM but if i had to decide between that and the Tele, the JM would go. My Tele is amazing. My musicmaster I have decided to give to my first born son. Going to try this summer. If it is a girl I will sell the MM.
Ibanez: Worth nothing. A 76 Challenger ala 50s strat. But was my right arm for so many years that there is no point in selling it.
Amps are another story...
-
I have 6 now:
-Yamaha Mike Stern (Tele style. My favourite one. Heavily modded.)
-Yamaha CPX900 (Electric acoustic)
-Epiphone LP Standard ---> I'll sell it.
-'64 Framus archtop jazz guitar ---> I'll sell it too.
-Washburn Maverick series (My laboratory animal: I'm experimenting every dirty jobs on it.)
-Classical guitar
Less guitar is allways better... I can't worn'em all, thats why I want to sell some of them...Last edited by doruondun; 04-16-2010 at 01:57 PM.

Drew, how many Deluxe's do you own?
-
Don't worry, it's an EX series. I think it's one of their cheaper guitars. It would have been fun to find a GB200, but such was not the case. The metal plate under the bridge was cracked and three saddles were missing, so I guess the previous owner thought the guitar was toast. The store I teach at is an Ibanez dealer, so even though the gtr. is discontinued, they were able to order me a new bridge. It actually has a pretty good sound (for rock) and an amazing feeling neck. When I get some more money, it's gonna be my guinea pig for learning all sorts of repairs and modifications.

P.S. Look-it only took me 224 posts to learn how to quote another post in one of mine! 3 cheers for computer illiteracy!!!Last edited by bkdavidson; 04-16-2010 at 02:06 PM. Reason: I learned I'm only kind of an idiot.

Put me in for five. Fat Strat, Epi Dot, Yairi Cutaway Dread acoustic, Aria FA-71, and a Guild CV-1c A/E. Considering a Peerless Gigmaster.
-
So, after 40 posts, exactly one (1) respondent has fewer than two (AKA "one") guitar?
Makes sense to me. How'd he slip in, anyway?

Exactly. Besides, if you get this T-shirt, she will probably buy the next guitar for you.

Ah, but I saw John last summer at a master class and performance. He had both his old red 335 AND his sig Ibanez, so scratch Sco off the list.

The Internet Grammar Police have asked me to transmit this message:
The title of the thread should be, "Do any of you guys own fewer than two guitars?"
I now return you to your regularly scheduled programing.
-
Yup. I was taught: if you can count them, it's fewer, not less.
