Mark I apologize for the misquote. I could have sworn you told me you had to pay to ship them back. CRS must be getting worse for me.

My 20+ year old Special has some red staining in the binding. It was delivered in, and lives in, a Harptone case, and I have always suspected a red cloth, and not the case, is the culprit. Although the stain kinda irks me (especially in light of the fact that the guitar is pretty much mint despite lots of playing over the last two decades), when it's in my hands, nothing matters but the way it feels and performs.

I have a gorgeous Campellone Special E made out of all Euro woods. I’m the second owner, and the guitar is in dead mint condition - virtually unplayed condition.

It’s housed in a beautifully built cc case, lined in a green crushed velvet. I believe the guitar is about 16 yrs old - and it’s a beautiful cherry burst. The binding has a nice vintage light yellow hue , and it does have some stains on the binding. But like Jabs said, its part of the entire aging vibe , and in my case it doesn’t bother me because the guitar is sonically extraordinary.

I also have an incredible Benedetto Fratello , custom Nashville build from 2000 in a cc case with a brown crushed velvet, and the binding also has stains- but the lacquer has darken so much the stains almost look like small brown blotches of maple, and it blends with the vibe of the guitar.

Now, if I had just bought a brand new guitar with white bindings that were stained from a cc case I would feel differently for sure - but if you have a great instrument with some age, and you love it, don’t let the stains ruin your enjoyment of the guitar. Jabs brought out some very valid points about this.

Also, I would never order another cc case. I ordered one 10 years ago for my 35’ D’Angelico and the glue smelt so bad I couldn’t keep it in my house. I complained to cc and they said the glue wasn’t cured. I even tried curing the glue in one of my commercial ovens in work, but the smell never went away. I let it air dry more in work for months. Then - I finally filled the case with cedar shavings, and after about a month it absorbed the glue odor, then I started using the case. That entire process took about 6 months.

There are many great cases available that won’t stain guitars - iim7 (Bob) pointed out several choices.

Mine has a Euro maple back and sides and a domestic Engelmann spruce top. I guess it's a Special 50% E.

But back to our regularly scheduled program.

Guitar cases have been a perennial weak spot in the guitar universe. This is market driven because the historic expectation is when you pay for a high quality instrument a case comes with it gratis. TKL, Cedar Creek and Ameritage (made in Costa Rica I believe) have had the lock on low to mid priced custom cases for guitar companies. I do not recommend any of these due to issues like we are discussing as well as their weight and I feel other options are more protective. It is very difficult for a builder to absorb costs for more expensive cases so they become up charge options. I recommend investing into a quality case. If you just spent >$5,000 or even $10,000 on a guitar spend another 10% to keep it safe. Not just from the environment, shock and vibrations but from material compatibility issues!

If you travel for a living with your instrument, buy either a Calton or a Hoffee. They are EXPENSIVE and heavy but they are protective, customized to your guitar and come with case covers and backpack straps. They are expensive but so is your instrument. BAM, Hiscox and Visesnut are also good options for local travel (but I don't consider them flight cases) and they are lighter and quite protective. Visesnut has a novel perimeter strap that can be adjusted around the guitars perimeter that snugs up the fit. The down sides are a small accessory compartment and non-TSA locks (this can be address with the use of their cover and a TSA lock).

Mark, do we know for sure that the TKL cases don't have these issues?

Jeez, I wonder why they don't just correct the problem by using a different lining.

White or light tan felt always made sense to me. Why the bright colors especially with porous nitro lacquer involved.
