Back when I was a wee teen obsessed with hypothetical situations, my best friend/bandmate and I would constantly have this argument:

My buddy's argument supporting the latter was "They would only have to play one note!"
But my counterargument was "Tone requires more than just equipment; it requires some technique to get the best sound from an instrument."
I'm no longer a wee teen, but I feel like that would still be my position: "a good jazz tone" takes skill, a deft touch, a modicum of experience to know What To Do With Your Fingers in order to coax the sound you want from the equipment you're playing.
