Howdy. As some of you know I recently got a PRRI with a 12" CRex speaker. Because of this I'm considering differentiating my 5e3 further by swapping in a British voiced speaker. I have an Eminence Maverick there now and used to have a Crex.

I also play other genres but I love the tone of the 5e3 for Blue Note repertoire. I would love to hear for those of you that use it in that way what speakers you've been the happiest with and if you've used Celestions or Eminence Redcoat (I.e. British) series.

In general I'm not a fan of "speaker overdrive" so my first candidate would be a Celestion Gold (rather than Blue) as well as Eminence ceramics. A friend has a cab with a Gold so I'll check that out for sure.

celestion gold is my fave current speaker...super efficient, tight but big low end, even midrange, and beautiful top end clarity..

& classic old style alnico mag speaker! really brings out the best in the amp..all the nuances

only caveat is- pricey (but definitely worth it!)

    cheers

    That’s great to hear.

And you gig with it and you feel you don’t need an american voiced speaker to get a Blue Note kind of tone?

don't think of it as a uk vs usa tone thing..just cause of country of origin

the gold is an old school alnico magnet speaker..with great specs...period!!

    cheers

ps- the efficiency of the gold is so good, it will be louder!! and stay cleaner!!! (tho not sterile) ... the true voice of the amp and guitar

I've got the C. Rex in my 5E3 and love it. Leans towards the Jim Hall GA-50 sound, plenty efficient to allow playing with a quintet with the volume on 2 1/2 - 3.

I really liked the CRex on my 5e3, I’m just going for something different

Just curious, what is a Blue Note tone? There weren’t many guitarists on the label, I only know of Grant Green and Kenny Burrell in the classic period (I’m not talking about the later incarnation under EMI), plus a few lesser known sidemen with Jimmy Smith and co. (e.g. Quentin Warren, Eddie McFadden).

I’m not sure what BN tone is but I’ll tell you what I mean when I use it in this context

I’m thinking Green and Burrell or anybody that recorded with RVG and used a 5e3.

OK I see what you mean.

A bit OT but I found this cool article about RVG and his methods:

I'm no amphead, didn't even know what a 5e3 was before this thread! OK I see it is a Fender Tweed Deluxe, i.e. desirable vintage tone and very expensive!

Yes it would be cool to hear some jazz tones through one of these.

I still have an old 70s Fender Twin reverb gathering dust, much too heavy for me now so rarely use it, I should probably sell it.

Your Maverick is adjustable, have you tried different settings? Coincidentally, when I got my Little Dawg 25 Watt 5E3 it had a Maverick in it. Maybe the 5E3 has such a distinctive tone already putting in a "British voiced" speaker will not result in much difference.

Yes, I’ve played with the Maverick. The change in tone is associated with a change in loudness so it’s not that adjustable.

I think it’s a great speaker, I am just considering a different tone to separate it even further from my Princeton tone.

While the 5e3 is characteristic, I’ve found that it’s very sensitive to speaker and tube swaps.

I'm back. I have the opportunity of getting an Eminence red fang for $100 locally. Looks like it's a poor man's Gold. (pun intended)

    Any experience with it?

red fangs were good....they were cheaper..but gold is the standard...celestions golds have amazing deep but tight low end

100$'s pretty good price for fang

    cheers

Anyone played a 5e3 through an 8 inch speaker.

Have a chance to buy. Lighter than a 12 inch more headroom than a tweed champ , but does it sound awesome?
