There has been much active discussion on the forum concerning whether Gibson is going to the dogs in terms of QC compared to other brands. It is very easy to produce a distorted picture from internet discussions, as they are not statistically meaningful, So let's do a poll to try to get some more accurate statistics on the topic.
So, if you have purchased a new Gibson in the last 5 years, were you happy or unhappy with apparent level of quality control undertaken before your purchase ?
I have no axe to grind - I have never been a Gibson owner - but wouldn't rule it out in the future.

So an internet poll is more accurate than internet discussions? I'm not buying that. They both come from the same source. Another statistic, yes. Still too distorted to be meaningful.
-
Point taken. If there are only half a dozen responses then the data won't be much use. However, hopefully we have a more significant number of Gibson buyers on the forum. The poll will be open for a month, so lets judge it when its finished - or when its so low down the forum that it doesn't get any more hits.

A smart man once told me: "With any guitar purchase you pays your money and takes your chances"

Interesting. That's the same quote my Dad gave me when I inquired about his new wife (#4).

the QC on my gibson is terrible, but it's also the best guitar ever so...

Jabberwocky is your Dad?

I don't see where that makes any real difference. A higher number of skewed responses have any more accuracy? Just being objective.

I voted yes, but my only new Gibsons are flattops.
And, I think a more important QC issue than initial fit and polish is how good will they play in 5 years.

You're creating a repository and normalizing for outspokenness. A person can only vote once. However they can go on a rampage about one bad experience, giving other the impression of more negative experiences. So, you definitely are providing something more objective than a simple thread.
I went ahead and calculated how many observations you need to achieve statistical significance. Right now the voting is 60% content and 40% discontent. So let's suppose we want to evaluate a 10% absolute difference from baseline (where baseline = 50%). With statistical power of 80% and p value of 0.05, you need 390 votes. I doubt you'll get there.
Also, the other point brought up is sampling bias. There's no way to confirm that the voting behavior is unbiased, or that it's even accurate. And there's sufficient reason to believe that it won't be.
However, I do find these polls useful. Even if you don't come to a statistically proven conclusion, your beliefs get updated in a way that probably* corresponds to reality.

My Gibson was pretty sloppy, mainly the fretwork. The frets were filed flat and had no crown. The lacquered maple fingerboard had lots of scratches too. Lots of fret buzz. After being crowned and leveled properly it plays like butter.
It was a cheaper/low end Gibson though (L6-S reissue) - however I couldn't help but note that new Epiphones didn't have that issue.
I couldn't find a single flaw on my MIJ Gretsch. Fretwork, set up, finish - all impeccable.
-
The only Gibson I ever bought new is a 57 reissue Les Paul gold top that I bought at a great price from Gino guitars in Italy. The guitar arrived flawless, sounds lovely (IMHO) and plays effortlessly with super low action and no buzz. No flaw spotted.
-
Of course, the main flaw with this poll is it doesn't probe how happy buyers of non-Gibson guitars were with the QC on their purchase. I should set up another poll, but not sure I can be bothered.
-
Not sure about the QC on my vintage Gibson lol
-
haha I was just thinking that too. My 175 is from about 1976, it had been knocked about a bit by the previous owner (Gerry Rafferty!) but otherwise seems ok.

Yes. Some has/had badly aligned tuners, pickups, and slightly mispositioned bridges, difficult to intonate because of it. Of course there is wonderful perfect instruments too with nice tone, vintage guitars reputation comes from good ones, but it is not whole picture.

I don't buy new Gibbys. I let someone else take the resale hit.

I can only vote once, but I have bought 2 new Gibsons recently. Both were spectacular.
