It almost always is ... one would have to use a ridiculously overwound humbucker to get split output comparable to a standard SC.

To me, a split humbucker sounds the same, but quieter and 'weaker' when split - not very close to the single coil sound in my opinion.

Often. Although not everyone felt that way:

But Jerry's rig did solve the problem of the output drop with splitting humbuckers- the unity gain buffer balanced that out before the signal went to the volume knob.
I'd love to hear a clip of that Ibanez with the Start pickup in it.

That's good to know. I'll probably rewire my split coil guitar (epi 339) in the future. Maybe just put another strat pickup in? hah..

It depends on the pickup. Some winders will pair up unequal bobbins in a humbucker, and then tap the stronger coil; that can produce a more robust SC tone, at the expense of some hum-cancelling ability.

I could be wrong; I'm relaying what I remember reading from winders on the subject. I'm not a winder myself.

I'm very much a beginner, so keep that in consideration! Any/all tips welcome.

I like the Tone a lot..
But I would have( personally for me ) the Humbucker Tone with a Switch for this type of Tone.
Playing sounds great for a beginner.
If you just smooth out your Timing no one will know you are a beginner.
Nice touch for the Tones too- that's the part you really have working for you ...
-
Thanks Robert. I might up the string gauge at some point, but liking it for the time being.

Wow, that sounds really great! How did you mount the pickup?

Especially if you know what you are trying to achieve there are a LOT of really smart and talented Players / Music Theorists / etc who can give you great pointers.

If you have a nice Android Phone or Iphone you can Download The Ireal App which has hundreds of tunes you can play along with ...
And modify them or just use the Drum Parts to play along with.
A Timing Reference will tighten up your Playing and you sound like you will progress quickly..based on Tone and Touch..

Thanks, I'll check it out. I've pretty much only been playing along with recordings, and playing over basic progressions with my looper pedal. I think it's time for backing tracks, and definitely the metronome..

Don't want to steal the thread or to contradict anybody but just saw this video about backing tracks spoiling Your timing:

I like the tone a lot! Great idea. Start neck pickups sound great - warm, detailed with great clarity. No mud but sparkle.
keep up the good work!

This guy is spot on! Backing tracks are ok, but only is the leisure time, when you done all the practicing and want to relax and have fun.

Sounds great. It's probably lower output, but if I was blindfolded, I'd say it sounds quite a bit like what a P90 sounds like in the neck position of an archtop.
Glad your experiment proved (very) worthwhile...now...how much do I want to find a way to get a tele neck pickup into an archtop?

Happy to be that devil on your shoulder

It'd be fun, but I only own one guitar with a humbucker neck route "ready to fill/experiment" with, and I love the pickup that's already in there.
