I could do without the wheels, but I have burbar carpet, so it wouldn't be rolling around with me sitting in it.

Turns out doctor's chairs are pretty danged pricey. Especially when I can't be sure if it would work out for me.

But then I saw this, and thought it might be worth a shot. Not heavy duty back support, but perhaps enough.

    I use a drum throne.
I also have one of these at the club where I play

Yes. I added the support to mine. I also have back issues which is what led me to the great Guitar chair hunt.

I'd give that serious consideration if a) I thought it could hold my weight and b) had enough cushion to make it comfortable to sit on for an hour or so.

Thanks for the response! Very helpful

It’s not plywood, it’s metal. The new ones have more cushion for your tush than the earlier model

I topped out at about 180 lbs (I am now 153 but that’s another topic). I use it for 3 to 4 hour stretches and it is great. Plus it holds your Guitar when you are not playing and has a bar for a foot rest.

I am pretty sure that Amazon accepts returns if it doesn’t work for you

I'm leaning hard toward this. But the description says the seat is 27" high. That's like sitting on a stool, right? I'm a tall guy but my length is in my torso, not my legs. I tend to prefer a low-sitting chair, which is what I like about drum thrones. But I need back support, so this is tempting. But 27 inches high? Really?

You may want to try a drum throne at your local music store.

Overstock.com: Online Shopping - Bedding, Furniture, Electronics, Jewelry, Clothing & more

It won’t be cheap but it will do the job. The height is adjustable and it is much more sturdy.

That's a good looking chair! I'll check local music shops (-not as many as there used to be!) and see what I can find. I'd need to try it before I buy it. Not adverse to "taking a chance on love," so to speak, but with chairs and backs, you really got to find what works for you and it might not be what you'd expect. Meanwhile, I think I'm going to wear a lumbar support brace while practicing for long periods. (The advantage of a brace is that it goes with you from chair to chair...)

Thanks for all your feedback! I really appreciate it.

You may want to check your local Classified ads like Kijiji, Craig’s List or eBay for someone selling a drum set with a throne. You may be negotiate your way into a new throne minus the drums.

I'm like Vinny1k. I practice on a secretary chair and put a foot on the base. Works fine.

I’m partial to my guitar practice couch. I can stretch out, guitar on my chest. Hard to read the music though.

Seriously, I’d like to get an upholstered folding chair. They’re cheap and ubiquitous but you have to buy a minimum of four.

I just bought one of these......Yes it's comfortable, yes it's adjustable, yes it looks good, yes you don't have to install the arms.....and yes, it'll tilt, but the rear sitting area doesn't go back far enough, 'cause it's padded pretty well.....

Bottom line, I can't seem to get the height correct for playing......I guess the only answer is a footrest, which I don't need on the sofa or don't need with this HON computer / mid-back chair ( which has arms )......I'd cut the arms of this chair, but I've been told they're structural........

    ....but good luck

I use the same sort of chair. A stenographer's chair. The seat is small enough you can get your back up against the chair back and still be in a good playing position. Mine was $60 as Staples and it has so far lasted me 8 years.

I couldn't decide which chair to get, so I bought a lumbar brace at Wal-Mart. Really did the trick for me. I sit up straighter, and maintain that posture, which keeps my guitar in a steady position while playing. Really makes everything better.

Still want a better chair than the old wooden one I have. (Think it cost me 5 bucks at Goodwill some years ago.) But I'm no longer in a hurry. I'll try different things until I find a suitable one. Meanwhile, the brace is great for me.

I didn't get it at Amazon, but you can see what I'm talking about here:

Sorry to hear that your back is not feeling well! I had a back injury a couple years ago, so I am also always looking for things that help me. I've found that when I use this support for my guitar, the actual chair I use matters less.

Charlie Byrd used one of those, or something like it, late in his career. I can see how it would help if you play in the classical position, but I don't, I prefer the guitar on my right thigh. Would this work for that, or is it only useful on the left thigh?

This particular support is so versatile. I've had it for a week and I've mostly used it to arrange the guitar on my left thigh, (see pic) but it does work if you want to hold your guitar on your right thigh. I have the one that works for electric guitars, I think it's called MI (for Multi Instruments). I actually love it so much I just ordered 5 of them because I'm sure my students will be wanting them, too. I've never been so comfortable playing guitar.

Anyone try one of these? Over 200 bucks, it's not something I would buy on a lark. But if it's a really good chair that would last me for years, it might be worth it....

Here is another Wegner chair for musicians that is much cheaper:

That's a LOT of money for a chair made from metal tubes.

    I thought so too.
But they make chairs for musicians---a lot of school bands use their chairs, it seems. ("Student" models, perhaps, for smaller bodies and bought in bulk...) They may be on to something...

The second one is around 100 bucks. If it works well and lasts (I went to the website and many chairs come with a 5-year warranty, which impressed me), I could see buying it. I'd like to know more first, though....

The first chair she sits in (-the 4-leg version) is $103 at Amazon right now. More than I want to pay but it's an amount I'd be willing to pay for a really good chair that suited me....

I think this kind of thing would make for an excellent guitar chair if you could sub a nice padded seat and back.
maybe add in a footrest. I really love the adjustable height aluminum legs!

I only suggest this because I had to buy one for my "sister in law" the one I bought was solid built and super cheap.

    I also like this one

I have a similar chair which I leave at the local club where I play twice a week. Mine does not have the back rest and the seat is less cushion(y). This will be my next purchase.
