Just kidding, it is off a tiny bit but it's no biggie. And the plainer headstock is growing on me.

Mike you are a handsome, and extremely loveable guy.
If I didn't see your picture, I would have thought you were 16 years old! Your passion, lust for life and amazing attitude is infectious!
Every one of your new guitars are beauties. They are all so elite, it's hard to pick a favorite.
So my question for you is, Have you picked a favorite yet? Which one has attached itself to your heart? There has to be one..
    Thanks for sharing.

Joe, you're not gonna like this... This Super Eagle sounds just like a Johnny Smith... It's nice and the neck is so effortless to play.

As to your question. HECK, right at THIS MOMENT it would be the 18 inch Unity... Breaks my heart every time I open the case and can look at and play it - damn it is so fine. Need to find a woman that evokes that much passion in me (well maybe not, the one thing about being single is I don't have to hide any of the guitars someplace else, LOL). But then I love the feel of the Golden Eagle, and the GB100 the sound really just jumps right out of the amp, and the 17 inch Unity - my first love affair here (well that and the Serbian woman on 4), and then there's the Byrdland which is so expressive. I don't know man, it's sorta like going to a great italian place, you get there thinking it's gonna be the policeman's style risotto and next thing you know you want the boscaiola and a spinach salad. Really we COULD do a big guitar orchestra with what I got...

Really fellas, this is IT... Well far as I know it is.

I don't know if you know this but an off center stinger on a Heritage Super Eagle with an odd headstock has a value of only 10% of its supposed value. Now to help you out, I can take it off your hands for 15% of what you paid for it and that way you'll never have guitar embarrassment. Send the guitar to -------------

I played her on the couch a bit last night and in the office, too muggy to be outside as mosquito bait. I will say one thing - it doesn't feel like an 18 inch guitar at all. I remember I had trouble feeling comfortable with a Super 400 I had, I think that extra depth was the issue. And I like guitars with floating pickups - partly because I play acoustically most of the time, partly because I like the floating pickup sound too.

    Just my 2 cents...

Nice flame! Looks like the Super Kenny Burrell with a custom headstock and the H tailpiece. Great grab BM! Congrats!

Edit - how long and how often have some of us written the 3" depth SE doesn't feel like an 18? Welcome to the party BM!

    2bop,

It is certainly true. The 3" depth SE doesn't feel like an 18" guitar, but it has that sound.

I really like it, like I said, it plays itself. I need to spend some time adjusting to it. I think it was Joe DeNisco who said essentially you have to be able to adapt to whatever guitar you are playing because they all feel different and require something a little different out of you... I am really critical of my photography skills after 2B and Marty with their excellent centerfold like spreads. But I gotta say my Rug Shots are growing on me... LOL

I looked at the binding on the headstock. Here's the background.

Not everyone at Heritage was skilled in binding. In fact one person did almost all of the binding for a long time, Curly I believe. (No, not the Three Stooges Curly). That's because with multi-ply binding application, it can be tricky and frustrating.

A good job includes that the angles in the binding must be sharp, not rounded. The binding is usually curved between the angles, so it is easy not to have sharp angles. The average binding guy commonly fumbles this. I've seen it on many Gibsons, for example.

The angles on your headstock, BigMike, are textbook perfect. This is particularly remarkable because of the many sides to the headstock compared to a typical Heritage.

That really is a great binding job. It takes strong hands to do this.

It didn't take me long to get over the shape of the headstock and the inlay thing once it was here and I was playing it. It looks entirely natural and right to me now. It's a custom job...

Here is a 40s Epiphone Emperor headstock. Your Heritage reminds me of it:

That's gorgeous Mike!! Keep it for awhile, if it is still "all that" in a year, do what ever you want aesthetically to it. If it is a lifer, get the most out of it!

Your Heritage has 7 layer binding on the headstock. They do 5 now. The reasons are that 7 is a lot harder and time consuming than 5. It requires more agility and experience, and it often takes a few attempts to get it right. The second reason is that it was felt that the transition for 7 layers on the headstock to 5 on the neck is a little awkward. That I don't buy.

Agreed on the pre '95 or so Heritage SE's and GE's, but this custom has a 5 layer headstock, least on my screen?

edit - note that while the fretboard has 7 layer binding, the body binding is 5 layer. 5 layer body binding is consistent with the Super Kenny Burrell archtops. While the body binding's of the Super Eagle and Golden Eagle from the same era as this custom were 7 layer body binding and 7 layer fretboard binding. Perhaps the 5 layer binding on this guitar was the custom order request?
