btw, over the past 3-4 years I had many a discussion with Patrick about this HDA. It was available, for $6250. I didn't groan about the price and, frankly, thought the guitar worth every cent...where is one going to find another like it?

Patrick wrote that he thought Jay made a mistake selling it to him. I didn't realize that he wanted to sell.

2b Here is the D'Angelico II for sale by Gruhn:
AR4478 D'Angelico New Yorker VSB 1994
Here is a Super Eagle for $3500 from Lark Street Music:
http://www.larkstreetmusic.com/stock.html (it is under archtop electric)
I am not feeling that high end archtops are doing so well. Last year, I bought a Guild Benedetto Artist Award for $4,200. With ebay/paypal fees what they are, I think I might lose money if I were to sell it.
I think that there are more nice archtops than players who A) want them and B) can afford them.

Yes, that Bigaby SE has previously been mentioned here. Most of these SE's are of dual humbucker configuration. Acoustics are rare. I owned one of 25 produced that Heritage ghost built for Gretsch. No matter the minor mods they're mostly a SE.
I felt the Gruhn HDA has been listed for so long because it was built by Heritage. I also much preferred the shading on yours.
But poor resell aside, and in spite of it, even at $4k the SE has filled a spot where no other 18" US built could. Which is why I refused to sell them for less. SE's too were produced in limited numbers.
Notice the L5CES available here for $5600 and no taker. It's a tough market finding a buyer for almost any guitar above $4k.

They do say Triggs on the headstock instead of D'Angelico, but with hundreds, if not thousands of Asian made guitars (some of which are quite mediocre) out there with the DA name on the headstock, it is arguable that today, the Triggs name might even have more Gravitas.

Tonight I used this guitar (hence forth the DA2, FKA the HDA) on a gig. This was a noisy restaurant gig with a drummer, not the best use of a carved archtop with a floater, but I wanted to try it.
The guitar did amazingly well (the drummer was on brushes all night and that helps). No feedback issues, great playability and great tone. I am bonding with this guitar very quickly. The 18 inch body with the 3 3/8 thickness suits me quite well (even in middle age, I still stand six feet tall). The 60's neck profile is perfect. The 25 3/8 scale (I measured it carefully and that is what it is) is perfectly fine (I admit that I do prefer 25 even, but this works).
One thing I should mention, nobody came up to tell me what a cool guitar it is. That only happened when I play a Gibson. Go figure.
The DA2 and I are in for a lot of nights like tonight. This guitar may have spent most of its life inside a collectors home, but that has changed. It is henceforth a gigging guitar, a tool of the trade.
Big thanks once again to Joe D.

Marc,
I am so happy that you are loving the guitar. It's a solid guitar that imparts confidence.
i can't tell you how much I miss seeing it in my house. The design of it is perfect. You can stare at it for hours.
No one commented on the guitar because they were too blown away by your playing.
Enjoy my man.
