Just curious what your favorite guitar cables are.

I've been using mostly monster jazz cables. However, they do not seem to be making them anymore -- perhaps the ones for sale are old stock? I've also heard (don't know if it is true), that they don't have the same warranty anymore.

My experience with them: good flexibility and sound, though I do have one cable with some issues (it may be past its prime, especially after the plug was bent a few years back).

I used to be able to get these cables for less on eBay, not so easy anymore. Not sure I can afford the super high end cables I've seen on the net.

Still prefer to make my own, some Switchcraft jacks, Beldon 8410 cable, and some shrink tubing and they sound as good as anything else and last forever.

I recently started using george l's for patch cables on my pedal board. I'm pretty happy, so whenever I need more, i'm getting a spool and a bunch of connectors. It'll last the rest of my life.

Got two Fender Custom Shop tweed cables about five years ago. Still use them, have never let me down.

I had one of those free with a guitar I bought last year. I really like it. It doesn't get tangled.

It sort of reminds me of the cord used on irons.

    Monster cables for me.

I also like Planet Waves (D'Addario).

This thread hits the spot---I need to replace a few cables now. This gives me more to think about than I would have otherwise thought.....

Vovox Sonorus, pricey but you can hear the difference and they're warrantied for life.

I like going to Markertek, getting their house brand, with Canari instrument cable, Neutrik connectors, in the color and length that I need.

The key considerations for me are: total capacitance (pF/ft times cable length), shielding, handling noise, durability, repairability, and handling convenience (tangling, draping, coil-ability and weight).

My go-cable is Lava Cable's lowest priced Magma series (back when they used Canare GS-6 cable). They sound fine to me, are easy to handle, and have gone eight years without failure.

I've had great results from other cables, but they have slight drawbacks relative to the Lavas: George L .155 (tangly), Elixer (somewhat heavy and stiff), and Whirlwind Leader (huge strain relief devices in the plugs).

My only bad cable was a low-end Spectraflex. It has a poor shield or ground, so is much more prone to hum.

I too use Fender Tweed cables. Great cables that are very durable, and don't tangle as easily as normal cables.

Common complaint. The only times they've failed on me is when I fail to make a propper clean cut before connecting the plugs. I haven't used them as guitar to amp cables yet, though, so I could end up having the same issue.

I found these and liked the idea and bought them recently:

I am still looking for a rating/review of cables just based on noise shielding and durability (none so far).

To be fair they were made by the guy who sells them locally so maybe he did not made them as he should have... I used them as patches and leads for years but I ended up finding them too bright (and unreliable). Anyway, hope you love them and they don't ever fail on you

Same here. I'm redoing my pedalboard with bulk Mogami and soldered Redco connectors because of it (having switched once from Lava). I know some people love them but they aren't more reliable than any other solderless.

To the OP: any cable that is durable with a non-molded Neutrik or Switchcraft plug should be fine. It's copper wire and 2 plugs ... I wouldn't overthink it. I like ProCo because they build stuff to last (I think their upper end is now called Excellines & Lifelines, lifetime guarantee, have had the same ones for 25+ years), or make my own. Monster is fine too: they have plenty of options available and uses good materials. Planet Waves. Mogami. All good stuff with no mysticism built into the price.

If you like the coil-free mesh that comes on some cables, you can build that into your DIY cables. It's called Techflex.

Does anyone know what cables were used in the 40s/50s?

If you do a google search, new 'vintage style' cables pop up but nothing about true vintage cables.

I'm not searching for vintage tone nirvana, just wondering (many of us obsess on vintage guitars and amps, why not cables?

Back then they just used whatever was available and there were very few companies making gear. I would say people today are creating a lot myth about legends gear and music instrument industry is feeding the fire to generate sales. Back then they mainly cared about there guitar and everything else was a distant second. The gear boom didn't start till the early 70's.

I have an old cord with switchcraft plugs that used to be 20 foot. It's been repaired so many times it's probably only 15 foot now. The right Angle jack is flat. I've played so many shows with this cord, if I lost it, I'd probably pay a private investigator to find it!!!!

No doubt. Amps were adapted from radio and PA designs of the time and we still use the same 1/4" jacks, from telephone switchboards, because they were available and durable. Guitars are a pretty lo-fi affair.

Fender tweed here as they are relatively inexpensive and I get a lifetime warranty.
