I just noticed this is an old thread I came because the Prestige Semi Hollow Gary Mitchell above is on my Radar to check out ....I need a dark 25.5" Semi to complement my impossibly deep dark Carvin 13 pound Koa Strat ...I will settle for 25" but those Prestiges have neck PU on 20th fret ...can't find anyone who plays clean who has one lol and Gary Mitchell is gone from here now ...Last edited by Robertkoa; 09-22-2018 at 12:31 AM.

I was able to successfully join the regional high school jazz band. I own a strat and a used ibanez 2355 ES-175 copy.
The band plays a lot of genre from classic jazz, to bebop, hip hop, and even rock.
So I want a semi hollow guitar which is versatile that will work in jazz and even rock music. I was looking and I found the epiphone 335 pro, epiphone p90 339, dot... Any recommendation?

Ibanez artcores are real good. The AM93 and AS93 have super 58 pickups. The smaller necks are quite comfortable to play.

what do u guys think about the epiphone es335 P90. It has p90 pickups. Are p90 pickups better than humbuckers for my situation?

Epi 335 (DOT?) is a good guitar for it's price. But Ibanez is even cheaper and offers even more guitar per dollar.
Telecaster kan do what you want as well. I play in a big band with soul-repertoir (Tower Of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau, etc.) and I alternate between my ES-333 and my (much cheaper) Fender Modern Player tele thinline P90. They both work very well.

Epiphone 335 Pro, 339 with h/bers or P90's! All good, I own 3 and I played a few new ones today at GC. I brought one home! Very affordable with excellent quality. Try before you buy.

If you can find a used D'Angelico EX SS (new they are often discounted to 800-900. I know it's still over budget) you get an incredibly versatile guitar with it's coil split option. I get a great jazz tone and get though the mix with neck pickup on single coil on slightly more poppy songs.

Ibanez AS-93, used, $400. Good quality for the price, good sounds all around. It's in my avatar.

For something $500 or < check out the Harley Benton Guitars website. They supposedly have fairly high quality guitars for the money. Some are made by Tokai, a very reputable manufacturer. The prices are incredibly low. They have an ES335/ES345 based guitar for $192. There's a current post on Youtube regarding the 10 best made budget guitars. According to him these are seriously good guitars. Check the link below for the HB Guitars website.

I know they changed the design of the Super 58s sometime in the teens. Mine's a 2015. The bridge pickup excels at rock and blues. The neck pickup is a bit wooly, which works well for some jazz tones, but I prefer middle-position and working the volumes. This guitar does that fine. Originally Posted by DMgolf66

I too got mine on half a whim. I went to a local GC to grab a used Epi Dot i'd see dirt-cheap. It was sold, but the Ibby was new to the rack. Tested it into a Mesa Lone Star and loved its versatility. 20 minutes later had it in my truck. At the store:

With P90’s there could be some extra noise. Probably not an issue in the band room, but could be at home. An EHX HumDebugger will tame the ground fault hum if it’s bad.
I personally like Sheratons. I had a Dot once—OK, but I think the Sheraton may be better made and certainly nicer looking—more bang for the buck.

I’ve bought some GFS pickups and hardware but never one of their guitars.

TBH, with current production methods, it’s hard to buy a guitar that’s TOO bad these days, even at the bottom of the price barrel.

Currently you have a guitar with single coils and another with humbuckers. The P90s sort of fall somewhere in between. (Probably get heck from some folks on this.) So, buying brand new at Guitar center they have a 30 day return policy. So if you dont like the P90s send it back, no risk. The Epi 339 are well liked. Just be careful to inspect it over for any flaws from the factory.Also, the Epiphone 339 has a smaller body width, 13"-14", compared to Epi 335 or Ibanez AS93, ES 175 copy, at 16".So that's something you need to consider. You might love the comfortable size of the 339. But if the P90s dont work for you, it also comes in humbuckers.Single coils and P90 go back to early days of guitar amplification. Some jazz players love the P90s here. They have more midrange with a bit of a growl to them. Bottomline this a fun experiment in what your personal tastes are. But one thing I have learned is tastes tend to change overtime. What you liked 10 years may not apply today.

First congratulations on making the cut for the regional high school jazz band group!!!The Epiphone 335 Pro is a 16" body with humbuckers. They are on sale at Musicians Friend for $399. This an incredible bargain on the classic semi hollowbody guitar. It will cover a lot of ground and in what you need.

Check out Harley Benton Guitars. Some bargains to be had there for sure. I have no clue as to the quality but one reviewer on the net gave them high marks.

Because of covid I haven't been able try out guitars before I buy them. I had a string of bad luck with used guitars bought through guitar center. Many of them arrived damaged during shipping but were still playable. I tried out an Epiphone Les Paul which sounded great but was too heavy. I also tried some fully hollow acoustics but would prefer a semi-hollow. I played an Ibanez JSM20 for awhile that sounded alright, but there were cracks in the neck joint so I had to return it.
I'm looking for a semi-hollow that's around $1000 or under. Any recommendations?

G&L Bluesboy P90 semi
You could try either Squire or Tribute line both these manufacturers offer for a third of your budget.
But my money would go on the G&L, well made, quality materials and underrated.
